Hi, I have been trying to locate ballistics charts and loads for .318 WR with limited success. I would like to hear how this cartridge performs for those using it and what loads people out there use. Including trajectories compared to say .30-06.. I'm sure there are charts for the Kynoch ammo, but I haven't been able to locate any. Yhanks in advance! Tom

i don't have access to my load data but it works well on big Game like Water Buffalo which is what I use it for. it's not optimum by any means but the 250gn bullet hits hard. Trajectory - I don't really shoot long range with it so I just hold on and shoot. All 3 guns plus the double of my mates have open sights. Even so, I would still take a 200 yard shot if needed as a follow up and a 100 - 150 yard shot as a first. I find the WR's Bolt guns are easy guns to shoot animals with, even "on the run" which I have done a couple of times. Sometimes, if the bullet is not placed just right, you will severely wound an animal (as said before, the bullets hit hard) but it will need follow up shots to put it down. .

My charts show a 180gr bullet at 2,700 fps, energy of 2,913 ft/lbs. In a 250gr bullet, it show 2 loads....one at 2,230 fps with 2,760 ft/lbs, and another at 2,400 fps with 3,197 ft/lbs.

I too am starting to work with one. I just bought a Cogswell&Harrison M98 that I can't wait to shoot. My plan is to use .35 Whelen brass and Woodleigh bullets and go from there.Graeme Wright's book(3rd ed) on Double rifles has a bit of information using several modern powders. 404 Why use 35 Whelan ? FYI, I use brand new 30.06 brass. Just make sure that you keep any 318WR LOADS IN 30.06 BRASS well separate from any 30.06 loads you have. .

I began by using a reduced load to fire form the '06 case and then just transposed .338/06 loading data. Works a treat as it should. The .338/06 is simply the .318's grandchild with the .333 OKH between them. No animal could detect a gnat's worth of difference between the three. BTW, the exit wounds are impressive, to say the least! Sarge Holland's .375: One Planet, One Rifle . . . for one hundred years!

I have seen it used on African plainsgame including eland and it appears to me to kill game about like a 30-06 with 220 gr. bullets. and maybe on harmones just to give it the benefit of the doubt.. . Never was that impressed with it short of nostalgia..I would much prefer the wonderful 9.3x62 on the same action. I have several .30/06's and no .35 Whelen to get ammo mixed up.It's also easier to neck it down, than to size up.Works for me. I pray for mud on my boots the day I die... Go see the nights of Africa.....

I checked my records and found as follows. 55 grains of IMR 4350, Win WLR primer, 250 grain Woodleigh soft or solid, Bertram or sized .30-06, 8x57 cases ( doesn't seem to matter). This gets roughly 2400 fps in four different rifles with no signs of high pressure and good accuracy.
