I have a wood-stocked M70 in 7mmRemMag, with 4.5-14 Conquest scope. I think that it kicks like hell, and I have shot 416 Rigby's and 458's. The 7mm has a much sharper kick.
I can handle the recoil, and shoot 3/4" with it, but I would like to tame it a bit if I can, especially the sharp muzzle-jump. I do not want to brake it....Any sugesstions?
Thanks

"Limbsaver" recoil pad. Huge improvementover what you currently have. Also magna-porting will take the vertical rise of the muzzle away without the ugliness of a muzzle brake. Cheers!

+1 (maybe even 2 or 3) on the LimbSaver recoil pad. Put one on my 7-mag Encore after shooting 25 the first day left me too bruised to shoot the second day.

I just recently acquired a 375 H&H barrel for it also. 270 gr. bullets going 2800 are quite pleasant, at least offhand. Have yet to bench it....

But your comment about the kind of recoil is spot-on. The sharp "WHACK" of the 7-mag or .300 Weatherby may have less fps or ft-lbs of recoil but it's applied NOW instead of "nooooowwwwww". Smiler

My .300 Weatherby is a M70 and I put a Bell&Carlson stock on it. Whatever recoil pad they're using is good enough for me, but if you want to keep the wood stock, LimbSaver is definitely the way to go.

To me the wood stocked model 70's and rem 700's are worse in "felt" recoil than just about any other design. I believe the reason is in the stock design. I have replaced the wood stock on a couple of rifles with a bell and carlson or hs precision. Either will offer a drastic reduction in felt recoil. I you wish to keep the wood stock on the rifle, listen to the others and get yourself a limbsaver pad.

Thanks fellas, I ordered a limbsaver pad from midway today, I hope it helps. Would you consider adding weight to the forend?

I'd wait and see how you like the recoil pad first. If this will be a "carry" rifle, less weight is better, yes? Smiler
