I am building a 7x57 at this time, very, very slowly mind you, but am making some progress.
Anyway I am a big fan of P.O. Ackley as he was a friend of my grandfathers, and I have read and re-read his books many times. He has probably "blown up" more actions trying new and improved cartridges than I will ever handle. He said that the 7x57 was the only cartridge that never needed improving. That says it for me.

My 7x57 is a real favorite. I shoot 150 gr. Ballistic Tips and 140 gr. Nosler Partitions pushed with H414. Might just be the perfect deer rifle and a mighty effective feral hog rifle. It's barrel is only 18.5 inches long and I get around 2700fps with either bullet.

H414 and any 139-175gr bullet will do just about any critter you might want to do. Good Luck on your hunt. Just my 2cents worth

Please excuse my inexperience but I know nothing about powders. What makes H414 so good?

I plan to start learning to reload after the first of the year. I'll re-load 3006 (165 & 180 gr loads), 300 H&H (200 gr), and the 7mm Mauser. Trying to keep it simple - can I use H414 for everything?

Thanks for your patience.

Hi doublegun,

I use and load for the 7x57 for the last 40 years.
About your question, for the three cartridges you mention, and for bullets from 150 to 175 grs in the 7x57, it will be hard to beat IMR 4831 or R 19/22 or H 4831, this Short Cut later (past 10 years or so) variety. You will get around 100 % load density or a slight compressed loads, ideal from my point of view, in all these cartridges. And with an ideal, also, pressure/velocity relationship.

Regards

PH

Back in the early 60's I bought my brother a surplus M-95 Chilean mauser.

I bought myself one, too- near-mint and beautifully finished, the mailman brought it from Century Arms (39.95) and my dad had to sign for it.

Here's mine. I use it for Wi. whitetail hunting. It is fast, accurate and more than powerful enough. I shoot 150 Scirrocco's in it for great terminal performance and a little more range than a round nose, although they're not a bad choice either. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot any deer alive with this thing.

The 7 x 57 has probably taken more game in Europe than any other cartridge from roe deer to hogs to red stag. Whitetails should not be a problem. Nice to shoot to.

I've killed plenty of elk, kudu, caribou, whitetails, and pretty much anything else I want to kill with one, largely with H414 and a 160 NP at 2700 fps or so. All are still dead, shot two whitetails and a coyote with it this year, three shots with 139 Hornadys.

Paul

I've got a couple of hundred of these bullets and I'm loading them for my 7mm-08. It's my woods gun this season. Using my 270WSM from my stand. I like the 170's since there are black bear in the area and I think this would be a good bullet to use on deer and bear.

Second the motion- there's a whole lot right about that rifle.

Tin Can: I'll third that.
And by the way, there's a lot right with your Dawn Wells photo!
