I use my Blaser R 93 barrel in 300 Win Mag only when I expect to have to shoot at 300 yards or longer. I have it scoped with a Leupold 3.5-10 Mark 4, M3, the one with the Ballistic Cam, ie when you shoot at 500 yards you set the scope on "5".

"Them Blasers" are fairly accurate, this barrel will hit a coke can at 400 yards, and stay on a 10"x14" metal gong at 535 yards "most of the time". Big Grin

I have shot pigs in the head at 285 yards and 2 red fox in Alaska at @300 yards.

The key to hitting at longish ranges, is knowing where you rifle hits at those ranges, and either being good or lucky at judging the wind.

The main key is LOTS of practice, with an accurate rifle/scope combo.

That seems a bit tiny for my use, but if it works for you, that is all that matters.

As to meat damage, whilst I'm in broad agreement with you, loosing a bit of meat to a powerful cartridge is preferable to loosing a whole deer by using an inadequate one.
Oh good gosh, plenty of folks on here will tell you a down-loaded 22Hornet is perfectly fine for anything out there. clap But..., I agree with you. Wink

The fact is that at the velocity and energy level of a 300 Win Mag meat bruising/damage can be severe with conventional bullets that shatter or fragment. Here the use of a Barnes TSX can help greatly to lessen this effect. However my point was that a 300 Win Mag is actually an overkill for small deer, and as such, it is not ideal, but can be used if you have nothing else.

The higher the energy of a carrtidge, the more bullet splash one gets. Going to a 22 Hornet is also not ideal, but silly for body shots with a tiny 40 or 45 grain bullet, not to mention the low BC of the bullet and its resultant sensitivity to wind drift and bullet drop. A recipe to wound animals.

Leupold VXIII 2.5x8 on my Sako 300 WinMag/

Someone mentioned they used Leupold VXIII's and VXII's in 3x9x40. I didn't know Leupold ever made a VXIII in 3x9x40.

I would go on a Swarovski Z6i 1,7-10x42 for general hunting
Swarovski Z6i 2-12x50 if You want to hunt during nighttime as well or on longer range

and the ultimative is the Z6i 2,5-15x56 WITH Ballistic Turrent - light gathering scope with the advantage of 15x power and bullet drop compensation by a simple turn - very very easy !

R. Walter?

Like your VXIII 2.5x8? My 300WM has a VariX-3 3.5-10.5x50 and I've been thinking about selling it to get the smaller lighter scope you have. I don't need the bigger objective like I thought I did when I bought it.

Kahles CSX Helia 2.5-10x50 with multi zero system. It is one of the best beside S&B Zenith.
That riflescope can take a lot of abuse in any conditions.

Hunting deer here in NY, an 06 is plenty. Quite often use my 6mm Rem, which does just fine. Now hunting mule deer in CO, I do find a use for a 30 cal mag. Use a premium bullet and meat damage won't be much of a problem
I have a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 on mine w/duplex reticle.

It seems they are all over the place, not just W(BG)V. If they don't Ka-Boom themselves first(more all the time), the Fish & Game folks are always interested in those stories along with providing them a nice hidden spot to park their truck. thumb
