Guys, I know a few enjoy this caliber on this forum, and I've one being put together currently on a M70 short action with a #3 contour barrel, 22" length. But what scope to use? Rifle will be a gift to my father so simple is best. Been considering the x2.5 Leupold (one of my favourites!) or a compact x4. Any other ideas, thoughts or experiences?

Take a look at the Leupold 1.75x6. I like the heavy duplex reticle. It helps in thick brush and low light. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Con Either scope you mentioned would work fine. I have a M700 .308 rebored to .358Win with a 1.75-6X Leupold which works fine for me. However; A 1-4X Leupold SHOTGUN scope with the heavy duplex would be the cat's meow! WN Fill your boots, man!

I'm partial to the 2.5X compact leupy with a 4A reticle fit. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, Decision has been made up for me by my friendly airgun dealer, of all people! Beeman Australia has just received a compact 4x32 with heavy reticle that's selling at a great introductory price. I figure a x4 might be easier for my Dad to hunt with compared to a x2.5, and a variable is more complication then needed for someone that doesn't hunt/shoot that much. Looks like a great years hunting is in store. Thanks again... Con

I use a 1-4XLeupold with 4A reticle, 2.5X with 4A, a Kahles 2.5X with PCH, and a 1.75-6X with HDPX. I find even with the heavy duplex you can still take a supported 300 yd shot with enough time. Normally my shots are real close as I take great pleasure in picking my shots and stalking. My longest shot on whitetails last season was about 20 FT! A huge, high powered scope would never have worked. Maybe I could have sighted down the barrel if I could have seen it around a large scope. We hunt agricultural fields divided by creeks and brushy draws. .358 WCF is fun and although I have one rifle and one pistol and a Whelen rifle, I have plans for another short and handy .358. Everything I hit with a .358 drops at once. Love em. Packy

Con, I think airgun scopes are bulit very differently as it relates to recoil...I don't think they will hold up on a firearm. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Con, I have a couple of short action Featherweights. The scope I put on them that is real handy and looks very balanced is not a Leupold, but a Weaver 2.5 x 7 Rimfire scope. It has a 28 mm objective, so it is compact, but Weaver builds this scope to handle the recoil of pretty heavy duty centerfires. I put one of a 338 Mag that had some stiff loads and a 300 Win Mag with some stiff loads, just to see how it would hold up. They also make a 4 power one, if you are into straight power. However, the price is right. Stateside they are about $110.00 US money. I am sure they are available in OZ or places like Midway can ship them down your way. cheers seafire
