Already own a 338 RCM Hawkeye and been thinking of purchasing a similar rifle in 300 RCM. These rifles have 20 inch barrels.

Have any of you messed around with the 300 and chrono'ed any loads? Not looking for estimates or opinions telling me to buy something else. Just actual facts about the 300 RCM.

I chronoed 150gr SST Superformance factory loads in a the 20" barrel and IIRC got 3250 fps which is damn impressive.
Handloads wit 150's and H4350 never got much over 2900fs BUT I never pushed it, they were all milder loads.

IMO the .300RCM without Superformance gives you high end 24" barrel .30-06 ballistics from a 20" barrel. This is plenty of power for my needs and I like the cartridge, although I would buy lots of brass now.

I used hodgdonreloading.com. Their load of 165 TSX with Superformance powder was great. Grouping was fantastic. Like a moron I let my brother talk me out of it. He still has it and won't part with it.

I have been looking at one of the left handed ones for sale on cdnn.

$499 is a good price for the rifle.

I am thinking of buying that and 500 rounds of factory ammo. Factory ammo seems available for now.

I dont reload.

The ruger Alaskan has become my new deer stand rifle - compact, easy to carry up and down the stand, tough as nails, accurate.

I really like the 20 inch barrel giving full performance.

This (ruger 300 Rick) maybe one to buy and put away. I think the 375 ruger will be around for a long time - not so sure of 300 Ruger.

Also 300 rcm rounds seem cheap - $1.50 a round

The one thing unusual about these rifles is the length of pull. It is 13 inches but you can always have a thicker pad added. I am 5'10 and can notice its a little short but when wearing a heavy coat and sitting in a blind or tree stand its perfect.

N160 and N550 are Vihtavuori powders. This lot of N11 is very close to but slightly slower than Norma 203b. N11 is 203b or Re15 with looser tolerances.

2789 fps with a 200 gn Accubond is clearly well into the red zone with shiny marks and all.

All shot in a RCM with 20" barrel. Use at own risk.

Couldn't resist. Ordered 3 boxes of brass from Cabelas as it was on sale. Next picked up 2 pounds of Superformance powder to try. Finally put the rifle in the cart at CDNN and purchased it today. Ordered a set of FL dies from Amazon. Will pick up a 2x7 scope soon but doubt the rifle will see any range time until early spring.
I will keep on saving money until its all spentSmiler

Snowwolfe; if I may ask about your 338 RCM? . Is it the 20" stainless Hawkeye?
How do you like it? With handloads can you get a 225 gr bullet to 2780 fps. How well does it do with 250s ?

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

All the lefty 300 and 338 RCM's are walnut and blued steel with a 20 inch barrel. Not familiar with the right hand models.

I shoot the 225's but have never checked the speeds on the chrono. Since moving out of Alaska to Tennessee the biggest critter I come in contact with is a whitetail at a max range of 50 yards.
