I recently aquired a Weatherby MKV German made. I am confused about the caliber stamping on the barrel, it says 300 Mag not 300 Weatherby Magnum. Could it be a 300 win Mag?

99.9% no. I believe the 300 wby is a tad older than the winnie. I doubt Roy would be pushing/advertising the 300 win in one of his early German rifles also.

Shine a flashlight into the chamber. You should be able to tell pretty quick if it has a radiused or angled shoulder then you have your answer.

In the early days of the .300 Wby Mag, the .300 Win Mag did not exist, so maybe they did not feel the need to be more specific than that - after all, what could a ".300 Mag" be...

Starting in 1925, .300 Mag meant .300 H&H Mag.

When in doubt, get it checked out. It's too nice a piece to risk damaging! derf

Yes, yes! I have an old book by O'Conner, and he refers to the ".300 Magnum" - and I do indeed think he is talking about the .300 H&H. Ah, life was simple back then

True, Tim, EXCEPT when it was stamped on the side of a WEATHERBY RIFLE!! I'm sure Roy thought his was the "ONLY" .300 Magnum....

Out of curiousity, is it a Weatherby barrel?

When in doubt a chamber cast will give you the answer.

I think the easiest way to figure this out is to just see what chambers. A 300 Win or Wby mag won't chamber in an H&H. A 300 Wby shouldn't chamber in a 300 Win Mag. Process of elimination should tell you what you have. - Dan
