I have shot both the FS 308 and the Varmint 308. I really like them and they shoot cheap 150 gr Rem Corelokt into small groups. you can kill hogs dead with it. For a super all around neat rifle, you can not beat a CZ. Am thinking about haveing one done up in 7mm-08. Good luck on managing to get just one.

I think there is a contagious CZ virus in the air! I just ordered a CZ 550 American in 9.3x62 this week. It should be here in a week or so. I can't wait to start playing with it. -Bob F.

I think you're right about the virus, Bob. Anyone who touches one of these rifles is going to catch it. I wish now I had made them drag out every CZ they had in stock to show me but I guess I would have missed my Dr's appointment slobbering on the rifles. I'll figure out what I want and go back. This has all just hit me sort of sudden like but I think I've got it bad now. I've forgotten all about my original quest for a 30/30 to shoot cast bullets. I think I'll chase down the CZ website and droll on it. Thanks guys for the input. Z1, if you're still on line, have you loaded .308 diameter bullets in your rifle and how do they shoot in the .311 bore if you have?

Pecos, I haven't loaded .308s in mine yet but have spoken to two folks that have. Both have said accuracy was just as good as with .310-.311's. Depending on load of course. I'm torn between the 125 flatnose made for the .30-30 or the 130-135 spitzers made for single shot pistols. Just about every die manufacturer included both .308 & .311 expander balls with their die sets.

Z1 - Since I asked the question I see most bullet mfg's provide .310 diameter bullets for this caliber, albeit in 125 gr bullet. Not really a great selection of bullets but to be expected with such a small specialized cartridge. And probably the bullet of choice if the whole field were available to pick from. Obviously this little round wasn't made for a 180 gr bullet etc. ------------------ Western, I havent run onto a used Marlin in 35 Rem. If I saw one now that I'm in heat for the CZ, I would probably just fall down and have a nervous breakdown.

I know just what you need Pecos, just grab yourself a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. The damn things are everywhere and yes they are a smooth action and a real pleasure to shoot, perfect cast bullet caliber too. Now youve got one more to stew over..

CZ's are great. I have this CZ 550 action that will become my dangerous game rifle in a few years... I love the way one can easily unscrew the bolt shroud to examine the firing pin and the 3rd locking lug & the double squared bridges & how it holds one more round than most others...

Did CZ ever start making any stainless guns?

See, now there you go, that's your first problem. DO NOT prowl the gun shops. I can't tell you how many times I've done that, and I've noticed one thing. It leads to gun buying. No kidding, it really does. If you stay out of them you won't buy nearly as many guns. I know it may sound funny but I think there is a direct correlation between the number of times you enter a gun shop and the number of guns you buy. With me it's nearly 1:1. All kidding aside, you'll be tickled pink with that CZ. They are VERY well made, shoot like nobody's business and they are a Mauser design. What's not to like? I read a post the other day about a guy who said he couldn't stand walking through the woods and looking down at his gun and seeing something other than "made in America". Well, I can relate to that, but I've had so many problems with some "American" guns, I'm getting over that. (Don't get me wrong, I'm an unabashed Ruger fan, and make no appologies for it.) But, CZ makes some darn fine rifles, and I have a .222 in a 527 that is sweeeet! Good luck with yours, and remember, STAY OUT OF THEM GUN SHOPS!

Pecos - I have the CZ Carbine in 7.62X39, and 4 pages of good loads. Except for Barnul, factory ammo seems to be held to about 45,000 CUP, but SAAMI lists it at 50,000. In the little bolt gun, 2550 fps with Speer 125s at .311 diameter is safe and far more effective on deer than a 30-30 flat nose. There are a number of .312 pistol bullets from 71 to 100 grs and they are more fun to load and shoot than anything I can think of. THE powder for these pistol bullet loads is Lil'gun, and 2800 fps with an 85 grainer is no problem. The Barnul ammo clocks 2550 fps with 123 gr HPs and is very accurate. At $1.88 a box, what's the hold up? Yes, they are steel, but there is no issue related to coating the chamber with varnish, as you just can't get it that hot in a bolt gun. Now, a word on the fine folks a CZ in Kansas City. I chipped the bolt face and locked up the action on my FIRST CZ Carbine as a consequence of talking and reloading at the range and feeding it a 50% overload. I confessed this to Mike at CZ on the phone and admited my violation of the warrantee, asking only for a price to put in a new bolt and inspect it. He laughed and sent me a NEW RIFLE at no cost. The bottom line is that this little carbine is way FUN to carry and shoot, and IMHO these guys deserve your business....go for it!
