Saw a 9.3x62 barrel for sale, good deal but it is only 20".
Is that long enough?
I was thinking more of a 22" barrel but would like to hear from the experts.
Thanks

I have used 20" bbls on rifles in 223, 243, 308, and 375 H&H. I have not noticed any differences in accuracy or killing power.

The 9,3x62 falls with in these same parameters.

I would have no reservations about a 20" 9,3x62.

I have shot the 20" 308 bbls to 600 yards, and the 19 3/4" and 20" 375 H&H bbls to 300 yards on paper. I like them.

A 9.3x62 is not a magnum cartridge and will have a fair amount less powder than a 338WM while at the same time have fair amount more bore volume to burn the powder. I do not see velocity as being a big issue.

I,m definatly NO expert .... My CZ 550 Medium has a longer than standard magizine box and chamber.... Came from the factory that way.... It has a 20 " factory barrel and it is the nicest little big rifle I,ve ever had ... With 270 gr Speer sp, moly coated I get 2500 fps and for some reason I get 100 more fps with the 250 gr. Barnes X bullet when its moly coated..with the same powder charge.........It averages 2605 fps. The rifle with a 1.5-6 burris posilok signature scope , and the issue open sights is light and very easy to have around ... I haven,t killed any thing with it yet,,,,,mainly because it has a wood stock and I,m nervous about haveing it out in the boat... Not that its all that pretty , but I,ve seen alot of wood stocks move around alot..and this one tends to ... It started out as a manlicker and got bucked off to a more sporter length...because it warps ........I should just put a ramline on it and enjoy the recoil reduction I get as a side benifit.....I,ll probably put an MPI lightweight fiberglass stock on it.....I need to shoot some bears this spring with it so I can see for myself how it works.....Very knowledgable men relly brag the round up ,, so I,ll have to see for myself.....I prefer a Red Mister for everything......9.3,s seem to work very well ,,,, the recoil is the same as a 35 Whelan

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

A very common rifle configuration in Europe is the "Stutzen" or fully stocked (Mannlicher for our American friends) type. These rifles typically come with barrels around 20" - much less than that and they won't be legal in some Central European countries. The 9.3x62 is a very common cartridge in those rifles - used primarily for driven hunting on pigs and the like.

Is a 1 in 14.2 twist the customary twist for these rifles to shoot the well known 286 grain bullet?
By the way very nice rifle and thanks to all of you for the info so far!

Terry, that surely is a good looking rifle. I would like to see more pictures, and know more detail about it.

I have a FN Mauser barreled action, #4 contour, 20.5" long, in 9.3x57, yet to be stocked, and I'm presently considering my options - nice wood? McMillan? iron sights? etc.?

I already have several rifles wearing synthetic stocks, so I'm leaning toward wood for this one. Inspiration would be nice. Pictures surely, as said many times, are worth ----.

Thanks,
KB

Oops, I was so impresed with Terry's rifle, that I forgot to directly say what I thought about the 9.3x62 with a 20" barrel, which I think is a good combo. The older I get, the more I like 20" barreled rifles.

So far, I have a 35 Whelen, two 308 Winchesters, a 450 Marlin and 9.3x57 in the making - all with 20" barrels. They just handle so well that any small loss of velocity is worth it IMO.

Here's a few more pics. It's a 1909 Argentine M98. Lother Walther barrel with NEGC sights. The stock pattern came from an old guild gun and modified a little.

Thanks for all the replies and pictures guys.
I'll go ahead and get the 20" barrel and go with it on my Mauser 98 project.
Terry those bases are great I had Michael make a set for my Win M70 in 375 H&H and I haven't put them on yet but I will soon and I'm looking at having him make a set for this Mauser project. Mine won't turn out that pretty I'm sure but it should be sweet. So far it is a Mauser 98 with a 3 position safety, the 9.3x62 20" barrel with sights, those Michael Scherz bases and Talley QR rings, Timney trigger and I picked up a synthetic stock to house the works until I find the right wood for it and a "little brother" project I'm doing in a small ring M96 with all the same goodies except in .257 Roberts. I hope these two rifles will really compliment each other when I'm all done.
Thanks again.

How much do his bases cost. Does he have a website? That is the way Talley SHOULD have made them in the first place (wider).

He has no website but I'll try to find his contact info for you. He goes by Gila gunworks and just moved his shop this fall from Arizona to Idaho. Last phone number I had was 928-580-0976.
You will love those bases.

I'm glad everybody says a 20" 9.3 works, since I got all the parts on the way to build a 20"er. Only thing I dont have coming is the peep/front sight. No scope. Its gonna be a hking/bear gun for my wife.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.
