Jimmy, I would imagine recoil wise the 270, 7-08, 308 would be similar. My pre 64 M70 fwt has a metal buttplate but it doesn't bother me and I've never found the 270 recoil something of a bother. Magnum

Jimmy, You certainly have been given plenty of advice and some you didn't ask for (like the 308 recommendation). I haven't been hunting in the US but I am a fan of the 270 Win though I haven't had one for more than 20 years. I am rectifying that now (bringing in a Winchester pre 64 M70 in featherweight from the US once your State Dept clears the red tape), but I have had the same rifle pre 64 fwt in 308 about the same time and reckon is a marvelous little cartridge. I can push 150gr projectiles out of the 22" fwt barrel at around 2,800 fps and it works great on Australian deer of about the same size of your subject. It will be a short action (another of your criteria). in fact my pre 64 fwt weighs 6.5 lbs bare. That's light enough for a mountain rifle and I would imaging you'll get ammo anywhere you'll get 270 or 30-06. They are just 2 great calibres. By the same token there's nothing wrong with the others either. After all the replies I'm sure everyone who has responded with their advice is intereted in what you do actual decide to get. please let us know when you do? Magnum
