I know this was discussed in a previous thread, but I didn't want to steal that thread and I have a lot more nitches to fill.
I have a Savage 114 american classic that is 30-06 and will stay that way for a while, but I am already thinking of rechambering or rebarreling for the furture.
I would like a 358 norma mag, but don't know if that would be an easy conversion like the 35 whelen would be.
I have:
22lr
30-06
two 45-70's

here are some of my thoughts:
358 Norma mag
35 Whelen
300 Win mag
338 Win mag

feel free to ad your thoughts. I need ideas. The rechambering would have to be cheaper than buying a new rifle or it won't be worth it for me.
Thanks
I'm willing to reload for the new chambering

While I have no idea about the boltface of the Savage you can get in the magnum ballpark with a 35 Brown Whelen.

I tend to use more than enough gun

Well for a simple rebarrel job with little or no feeding changes you could do the 35 whelen or the 9.3x62 or .338-06 or a few others.
If you do any of the Magnums that you mentioned you will lose capacity of shells in the magazine and have to change the bolt or have the bolt face opened to accomodate the larger Magnum rim diameter and change the magazine box and follower and maybe some feed rail modification too. If it were to come to that you would be smart to just buy a Magnum variety in the cartridge you want or in something close and then re barrel.
Just my 2 cents.

I guess I'll see when I get there, but it will probably end up being a 35 Whelen. For some reason, I have become very interested in the 35 calibers. I'll probably buy a 300 winmag and turn my 30-06 to a 35 whelen or an improved version.

Think about running a .30-06 Ackley Improved reamer in your Savage. .300 H&H level performance from your '06.

yo,
take a look at the ballistics of the 9,3 x62. 10% more power than the 35W, runs right at the heels of the almighty 375 Holland. I was impressed enough checking the cartridge out to buy a new CZ FS inthe X62

On the rechamber options, the .30 Gibbs (.06 super-improved) comes to mind.

$85, or so, for rechamber and about that again for dies.

You do need to consider that the body taper changes and may pose feeding problems that may not be worth the hassle.

The rebarrel options are many. I'd stick with the 0.473" boltface myself.

First of all.....you're never going to shoot out that Savage in 30-06.....but you want something with more muscle and cost is an issue.

Simple.....when you're bored with that Savage just trade it for either a new Savage or a Remington 700 in 35 Whelen, or anything else used......there's a M-70 300 mag here for less than the cost of installing a custom barrel.

how long does it take to shoot out a 30-06 barrel?
I shoot about 100 rounds every week to two weeks.

I've been trying to get info on the 9,3x62, and so far it's looking like a good option. there is plenty of factory loads even if I ever don't feel like reloading

Here are some inexpensive barrels, that usualy shoot well. You also need the barrel nut wrench.

If you switch to a magnum, you need to change bolt heads.

Here's the Barrel vise I have.

You also need either a set of headspace guages, or a sized case to set headspace. Here is a how-to. They also have a good classifieds section.

I have bought two new, unfired Savage take off barrels. One shoots great, the other need to be bedded, I have only shot it twice, so far.

thanks for the info, I would definately consider doing the work myself. those bolt faces are very cheap, so no cutting of the bolt face would be needed.
