Stopped by one while running errands this morning.

In the rack, between worn out Mossbergs, was a 98% Winchester Model 70 Classic Compact in 7mm-08 with a so-so Bushnell scope in 7mm-08!!! $350....uh, I'll take it. Big GrinBig Grin

With 4 kids, another rifle (esp a compact) is always a good thing. And I think the 7mm-08 is THE whitetail caliber.

Perfect!

Yesterday, after running into town for a Leupold VXIII for my 45/70 I "stuck my head in the door" of the pawn shop on the way back to the "main drag."

Big sign in the window, "Guns 20% Off" --

In between some surplus "Bubbas" and various other stuff, couple antique Damascus bbl. "wall hangers" --

Weatherby Vanguard, 30-06, about 85%, mechanically solid, worn finish, with a Leupold VXII 3 - 9x 40mm.

$367 out the door! I got my M-96 Oberndorf Swede out of a pawn shop, Bulgarian SKS, Makarov . . .

Several knives -- Schrade went out of business you know. Kershaw made in Oregon, not Japan.

A Samsonite carry-on bag for $10, but "if you'll take all the hand-tools in it, it's $15."

Somebody twist my arm!

Well I was in my favorite Pawn Shop only yesterday. They had some hunting rifles at reasonalbe prices in calibers I already have. They had nothing used in .222, 223 or other varmint calibers so I just let those good deals go to someone else. thumb

Unfortunately the word is out around here and the pawnshops get worked pretty hard. Best I ever did was a mint 1903 Springfield National Match and a Monty Kennedy Apex FN Mauser custom with 3x9 Leupold both for $500 out the door.

Around me all the guns in the pawn shops must be gold plated because the asking prices are new or higher.

As usual just my $.02

oops, what I thought was a scratch on the barrel was just a bit of paint that rubbed off!! Make that 99.5%. I don't think this rifle ever left the safe.

I have gotten a few good deals. An M1 carbine for $200 about 5 years ago was the best to date. As well as some AR15 USGI mags NIW for $8 each in the middle of the ban.

Now let´s not forget auctions -on Sunday I became the proud owner of a BRNO ZKK 600 in 30-06 with a folding peepsight for the equivalent of about 150 USD!

Once again I thank Boha and Husky for their cooperation!

Local gun shop here is almost a "Farmer's Market." Sky's Gunsmithing.

Oregon Coast -- the guy runs a gunsmith/sales out of the basement of a small "Sporting Goods" store.

NOTHING out on the floor except for the "trading stuff." The place is pretty messy, guns leaning against walls, stacked everywhere. Old gun catalogs, new ones, boxes of parts, dies, old reload presses. Partial boxes of ammo stacked here and there. If you want to see something you need to wait until Sky can get to you, and then ask. Some day's Bob is working and can get it for you.

In the meantime, boxes, piles of stuff on the counter, used parts, loose springs, "stuff."

I'm learning how this place works.

My Ruger Number 1, 45/70 stainless. It was in the back, waiting to be sent out to Ruger to replace the lever latch. No price on it, no display. I asked. There was one in the back.

Bingo! It's mine. "You can pay me later, when it comes back from Ruger."

Cleaning out my gun room at home, I found some small pistol primers (a case), and several boxes of .223 bullets in different weights. Also a bin full of .223 brass "range pickups" decapped and sized.

"OK, Sky, I'm not looking to clean up here, just wanting to clean house at home. $50 toward my Ruger that's out for repairs.

Then there's a pair of Uncle Mike's sling swivels. No lugs, but the white plastic spacer is in the package. $5.

Then there's a box of Rem. 30-06 150 gr. -- OK, it's 18 factory, and 1 reload of odd brass and looks like 180 gr. Also a Box of Federal 30-06, 180 gr. -- 10 live ones, and 10 fired brass, $20.

I got my 45/70 dies off the "junk table" out front, RCBS. There's a whole box of dies there.

Also a stack of furniture -- bolt action rifle stocks, and some "buttstocks" from gawd only knows. I'm simmering on the idea of putting a gun together. Get a piece of wood, action, figure out a bbl. It's all laying around down there.

Sky will run a collimator on your scope for you, no charge.

And the locals hang out and tell lies to each other. It's a swell set-up!

One time I got an early-50's vintage commercial FN Mauser that WA Sukalle had barreled in 30-06. It had a Weaver steel-tube K4 in Stith mounts.

Was $200 too much?

About 6 years ago I got a M-1 carbine out of a local pawn shop for $75. Why so cheap? It didn't have a magazine. I didn't bother to try to talk him down which my buddy thought was totally out of character. Hell, it was hard enough to keep a straight face when the clerk explained the price reduction.

45/70....

IN what town is this place you speak of????
Want to check it out!

Our local pawn shops end up with a lot of Springfields and fun stuff like that... I have gotten an Enfield ( sporterized, but a tack driver) for $100.00... a Krag for $200.00, but it is a rare carbine model... and is worth a lot more than what I paid for it...Springfield, Rock Island made action, for $100.00... using it as a project rifle.. barrel was so/so.. and stock was junk..... Savage 99's are plentiful...

I use the pawn shops in the Dallas area for my FFL transfers because they are half the price of the gun shops. The pawn shops seem high on their prices here as I have never seen the prices you guys have.

Sky's Gunsmithing is in the basement of Links Sporting Goods on the "main drag," 1254 Commercial St. Astoria. 9 - 5:30, Tues. - Fri. He's closed Sat, Sun, Mon, "so I can get some work done!"

-- Ahhhhhhh, but I picked up my Weatherby (above). I was wrong! It's not "80% - 85%." It's more like 95%. I looked down the bore in the shop. It looked sharp enough, but not bright. The obj. lens was covered in dust as was most of the gun. A bit of dirt in the checkering.

Cleaning it up on the bench here it becomes obvious that it sat in a gun rack in some dusty room (oil heat I'll bet, sorta "greazy.") and never got used. It's about 95%

I am from Idaho
I just spent two months working/livinging in Astoria. I was in Links looking around. They weren't really open downstairs and it didn't look like much and I never went back. Was in the deals only place across the street a lot too, boy did I goof.

We love used gun/pawn shops. Month ago picked up a older 700 BDL LH ( Karen and I are both leftys) in 270 with a VariXII Leupold 3x9 for $375.

Don't forget yard sales either. We have found guns and last year picked up a night vision for $15 at a yard sale. Didn't really have a need for it so it so it and a 20 dollar bill got me a M8-4X Leupold from a pawn shop.
Others too But this is enough now.

The pawn shops around here want more for used guns than you can buy a new one for. Never found a good deal at a pawnshop.

IT'SA KEEPER !!!

Bear with me on this. I gotta have someplace where I can swoon!

The deal is, I found this Weatherby, etc. etc. -- see above. Longview is a 50 mile drive, one way. Not a bad drive, no traffic to speak of.

The background check got "delayed." I have a CCW, and lotsa gunz. I'm thinking it's because it's an out of state sale.

So, picked it up this morning. Shop opened at 9 AM. I'm there at 9:15. Then down to "Bob's" -- "Bob's Merchandise" is the ONLY decent sporting goods in a 50 mile radius. But it's like "Disneyland for big kids." Picked up an Uncle Mike's basket weave leather sling. I just really like leather. And flip-up Butler Creek caps.

Got home at noon, put it on the cleaning bench and took it apart. No hidden nasties! Crud here and there, accumulated dust, greazy dust, impacted in a few places. Scrubbed the furniture to get the dirt out of the checkering. Patches through the bore. Chamber is perfect, bore is 99% easy.

Nice to be able to shoot in my yard! Oregon law says if there's a season open (It's deer now.) you can't go out on the logging roads and set up a bench to sight in -- unless you have a game tag. I passed on the deer. I have the elk tag, but the season's not open.

Anyway, I can get 30 yds across the landing between the house and the barn. Nobody behind the backstop, and a steep bank up to the back pasture. Rest of the land is either "up range" from a neighbor, or "uphill."

Out in the country, not unusual to shoot on the property. Previous owner took a buck from the front porch. That's pretty normal stuff here. (Oregon Coast)

My 30-06 ammo is mostly mil. stuff for the Garand. But I have dies and bullets, brass.

So I set up my bench, some targets. Isn't the 9" paper plate a "back woods standard" ??? Magic Marker an X in the middle. The box in the ammo can says "30-06 FMJ BALL" -- but it's "odd ducks" Howard gave me years ago. WW Super X, and I think 150 gr.

Not a serious sight in. I just want to see if the bullets come out of the muzzle. *LMAO*

6X on the scope, fiddle a bit to get it in focus. Boom -- I can't see where the bullet hit. I thinking it's shooting WAY over the top of the backstop or something.

Open the bolt, walk over and check the target. The hole is in the middle of the black, magic marketer X. Second round is a "clover-leaf. Third shot goes between the other two.

New target. Thinner lines from the Magic Marker.

Five shots -- like a "5" pattern on dice. All connected. Yeah I know -- 30 yds. But it's old ammo, and I've not "sighted in" anything. Just a "first firing."

Trigger is sweet! (Adjustable you know!) The stock just feels good. Fits nice, and the whole rig is pretty light as rifles go. (I'm used to Mausers, Garands, and Bench rifles.)

It's a keeper! dancing dancing dancing

-- I wish Sky would get the mailer from Ruger and get my Number 1, 45/70 back from the mfg.

(Missing lever latch.) -- But, I can do Elk with the 30-06! Find me some heavy pills!
