well, ended up passing on the 257 roberts--it was a ruger model 1. I've been throwing around the idea of either a ruger no 1 or a NEF in 243 or 25 06 or maybe the 7mm 08 in the NEF. I like single shots and already have a ruger #3 in 223, but want a step up-the closest action to the #3 is the #1, but the NEF would also be managable and a cheaper alternative, but I'm just not sure. I also wouldn't mind the 257 roberts or even a 250-3000 savage, but only if it were single shot. I think the NEF would be easier to carry, but still lean towards the ruger. The 243 I have shot and know what it can do, but I have never shot a 25 06, 257, 250 savage, or the 7mm 08. So, for recoil sensitive shooters, what would you look for as far a gun (singleshot preffered) and caliber? Thanks Dave

If you have a little too much money to burn try a Dakota Model 10. Check out Steven Dodd Hughes' in 257 Roberts on the cover of the feb 04 "The Accurate Rifle". He said that it was going to sell it. Now if you've just paid off the Lear Jet it would be just the thing.......DJ

Why not pop over to Mike Bellum's site and talk with David White, he is doing stubb barrel set ups for the NEF/H&R, some like the 6x30-30, he may have one that would work for you

Hey Dave, Once you do decide on the caliber, finding one in the NEF/H&R is also a bit difficult at times. I was visiting a buddy 2 weeks ago and he handed me a box of 1000 147gr FN-FAL 30cal FMJs. He had ordered the wrong Part# and thought he was going to get some loaded ammo. He hasn't done a lot of rifle shooting lately because of a Pacemaker. I told him I'd be glad to take them, but if he would get an NEF in 30-30, 308Win or 30-06, we could "Down Load" some cartridges for him and use them up. Then when they are gone he could buy other components or sell the rifle and not loose much money at all. I saw a spark in his eye and he began the search. Nearly every Gun Shop he spoke to was "Sold Out". He finally found one in 30-30 with the hardwood stock and iron sights for (I think) $190. I got to handle it 2 days ago and it is very well made for the money. It has enough weight in the barrel to "hang well" when holding it Off Hand. The trigger is a bit heavy for me, but rumor is that NEF will lighten it at no charge if you return it to them. No creep or drag in it, but there was a good bit of over travel after the release. We've not shot it yet, because he needs to locate some Dies. Nice rifle!

Dave. Passing on that ruger #1 in .257 Robt. may be a mistake. I picked one up at a gun show and it shoots factory ammo into .75" Guy that sold it said it was "shot out" so he sold it fairly cheap. I've been lookin' for a #1 to convert to .35 Whelen, but decided to shoot the .257 first. After giving it a damn thorough cleaning with Sweet's 7.62 and JB Bore paste, I sighted it in and got the groups mentioned above. I had to go looking for something else to convert. Ruger #1's are habit forming. Once you get one, you just have to get another. Paul B.

Yea, I know it might have been a mistake, but right now I just did not have the $$ stashed and I sure can't afford a divorce!! I have a few years to find what I'm looking for any way... Dave
