I've got a couple of guns that are dear to my heart. One was my grandfathers, and the other belonged to one of my best friends Dad.

I've killed several deer with the 270, and have never shot the 243. Looking to turn them into something really cool. I know that any pre 64 is cool, but I want possible re barrel, re stock, and possible Ackley Imp. on the 243, or convert it to a 257 Roberts AI, or 7-08. May even convert the 270 to a 280 AI. Need help thinking through this, and need good recs. for someone to do the custom work. Pacnor etc.???

As usual look forward to your ideas, and comments.

.243 & .270 what else could you ask for??? bewildered Both wonderful cartidges!!!

Anything you want the .257 or 7-08 for...use the .270!!!

As for the .243...there is a long-range shooing school where on the first day the instructor takes a .243 with just a plain ole scope on it and walks around the course with each individual with anything they want to shoot and matches them out to 800 yds I think.

The little .243 humbles them quickly. Wink

Keep'em as is! If you want to build something...just go buy an action. Smiler

To turn those rifles into "AI" chambers is among the dumbest things I've read here.....

Having said that.....if you must....contact Jim Kobe who posts here.....He's a master in metal and wood.....

Keep them original, or you will regreat it.

If you want something wiz-bang new, use the money to buy something wiz-bang new, and keep those old classics original.

AI change costs a lot, adds complexity to the ammo and accomplishes virtually nothing you will ever see in the field. ??

First off Vapodog, I put these thoughts on here to get ideas and wisdom from some of you. Dumb is a pretty heavy word. Don't appreciate rude comments. Tread lightly! "Need help thinking through this". If this is one of the dumbest things you've read on here, you haven't read near enough.

As for the other comments, I appreciate them, and that is why I posted on here. I haven't decided anything, and am interested in hearing your comments. Never said I would convert them. Said I am considering, but wanted your opinions.

If I keep them as is, I will still have to have them worked on. Who is the best to work on stocks, possibly even re stock the 270. It was cut off back when my grandfather had it, and he put a recoil pad on it. Gun is still a little short.
Thanks

One can tastefully restock a pre64 without negating sentimental value.
Winchester never bothered to give the pre64FW anywhere near the stock it deserved.
Replace the clumsy factory club as soon as you can and never look back.

just a suggestion, but I think the wisest thing you can do with both of those rifles is to keep them as original as possible. If you need a new stock, make sure you get a good stock person on it. If the rifles do not shoot well, I guess a new barrel is in order but if I had both of those, I would not change a thing unless it was absolutely necessary.

I'd sure keep that 270 a 270!

Vapodog, I appreciate it, and hope I can get your help with some of the questions I will have in the future.

Do you have any contact info. on Jim Kobe? I would like to contact him asap. I'm more than likely gonna try to get some stock work done on these guns that will make them more enjoyable to shoot. I want good wood with some figure, but not to the extreme grades that would inhibit me from carrying a gun hunting.

Any other really good stock men would be appreciated.

tc98,

1st - Post pics.
2nd - Determine if they are all original.
3rd - Determine collector's value.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!!!

Trax: Beautiful stock on that rifle!

TC98: If you want to keep it original AND not be afraid to actually hunt with it, consider a good synthetic: Bansners top, McMillan bottom:

If you decide to rebarrel, I would recommend changing the 243 to 260 or 358 Win, and the 270 would make a nice 6.5-06, 280 or 9.3x62.

Trax, and Buckster,

Great looking rifles.

I'm not afraid to hunt with either one of these guns. I just don't like the way they fit. The stock got cut off for a recoil pad on the 270, and it's about 1/2" to short for me, the 243 stocks never have appealed to me, or fit me good. I have decided to leave everything original except for the stock. I may get someone to install a little thicker spacer, and a different recoil pad on the 270, but I will probably get the 243 re stocked, and keep the original put up. I very well may put the 243 in a synthetic just because of the convenience. Need to get some prices on a wood stock first.

Trax, can you give me the contact info on the stock maker that did yours.

Vapodog, I never did receive the info you sent. I'm not sure what went wrong.

Thanks
