Can someone give me the predicted pressure and velocity of the following?
.30-06
22" barrel
180 gr bullet
63 grains RL22
Federal 210 Match primer.

My guess based on appearances.....60,000 PSI and 2,850'/sec

For the record.....this is 3 grains over book max and a heavily compressed load.

I'M NOT RECOMMENDING THIS TO ANYONE!!!!!

If you don't mind could you also do a quick load prediction for a 300 RUM with Federal brass 100.5 grains of Retumbo
180 grain TXS
215 federal primer

THANKS

For a decent prediction, I need COAL, and brass capacity (grains of water), and the exact bullet.

Using standard conservative assumptions, 58,500 and 2800 fps.

As far as the RUM goes, 69,000 PSI for 3200 fps, with the same caveats. Need more imput. HTH, Dutch.

COAL is 3.286 and the bullet is a Hornady 180 grain soft point boat tail and the case holds 68.3 grains of water.

With the Hornady Interbond seated with the stated COL, QuickLoad says: 69,509 PSI
2926 FPS
Just for the record, I have 2 30-06's which shoot 180 gr. TSX's over 60 gr. RL 22 in well under an inch at 2750 FPS. Used that load in Zim last year, no complaints.

the case capacity in water for the 300 RUM federal brass is 115.3 grains of water c.o.l. is 3.6", 180 grain TXS, federal 215 primer and 100.5 grains of Retumbo

JWP, with those changes, we still show just about 68,000 PSI and near 3200 fps.

I would back it off a bit..... HTH, Dutch.

How many gains do you suggest I should back off? My barrel is 27 1/2" and that load chrongraphed 3437 fps @ 78 degress f. I got that load out of a loading manuel and worked up to the top load which was 100.5gr of Retumbo. I do not want to be shooting an unsafe load

FWIW I loaded four new cases with the 63 grains and they extracted well, no marks at all, primers were not unusually flat but did show signs of pressure.....so I decided to reload them and chronograph them and then I found it.....the primer pockets was just barely able to hold new primers.

To me this is clearly too much pressure so I'm back to loading 61 grains and I'll chrono them tomorrow and let you know how it's woprking out.

JW, bootstrapping the simulation to approach 3437 leads to a pressure estimate north of 72,000 PSI.

I would aim for a velocity of no more than 3250, which indicates about 60,000 PSI. 96 grains is what the model predicts.

Again, all the vagaries of modeling apply, but it is entirely possible to start seeing "pressure signs" anywhere between 50,000 and 75,000 PSI.

Vapodog, primer pocket expansion is related to both pressure and the size of the chamber. You can wreck brass very easily at standard pressures, if the base of the chamber is oversize in relation to the base of the brass. FWIW, Dutch.

I loaded four rounds at 61 grains of RL22 and run them over the chrono and got 2,747 to 2,690 and I just mentally said they run 2,700'/sec and this is a 22" barrel.

The load seems reasonable, and the rifle I love because it carrys so well and 2,700 with 180s is not bad from a 22" barrel.

It's not a .300 Magnum but if I need more gun than this I just get the .375 out and settle things.

As far as I'm concerned I now have a pair of .300 magnums and a .338 WM for sale.....

JW, I personally wouldn't feel the need to be quite as conservative as Dutch. Wink The only decent published data you have for that powder is from Hogdon. They use that load and get 3300 from a 24" barrel. Your 27.5" should be good for around 100 more. Personally, I'd say if you're around the 3400 fps mark with a 180 (excluding the non-coated X FB) you're right around the pressure Hodgdon was running.

The wildcard in the charge weight will be the bullet. An XLC might take a grain or two more powder to reach it than a "normal" bullet, an XBT non-coated might take a little less. An X FB might pop primers before you get there (I hate those things!) so don't try. I haven't used the TSX but if you've compared them with other bullets you might have a pretty good idea.

FWIW, I use 95 grains of Retumbo behind the 200 AccuBond and it's very mild in my rifle (116.1 case capacity). 95.5 and 96 is commonly used by others with that bullet. Most 180's would certainly take a couple grains more....
