I found what I thought is a good deal on a bascially new Win 70 in 270 WSM in a McMillan stock gone over by Hill Country Rifles.
I don't have it in my hands at the moment since the rifle is in the process of being shipped to me.
I know this is a little late but can any shooters here report on there work?

I found their work to be first class; and on time!; and they were easy to talk to and work with.

There is a post in the Classifieds about a rifle worked over by Hill Country that is still not "up to par".
Not saying the HCR did a bad job, just reporting the results.

I have had one rifle accurized by HCR and one custom rifle built by them. Both shot .5 MOA with factory ammunition.....better with my hand loads.

They have a reputation for quality work and excellent customer service.

Tip top!! They accurized and rebarreled my wife's .270 Weatherby for our last safari.

No worries there

A couple of years ago I had them accurize a 338 ultramag in rem sendero. I also asked them to install a Vais muzzle brake. I told them time was not an issue as I would not need the rifle for another 18 months. When they called to tell me the rifle was ready, and since I was going through the area I picked it up rather than having it shipped. When I got there and inspected the rifle I noticed that the brake was not the Vais brake that I had requested. I inquired whether it was a Vais and after some discussion it was determined that no, it was not a Vais brake, and yes both my copy and theirs said that I had requested a Vais brake be installed. They said that the reason that the Vais was not installed is that there were none in stock at the time. They also told me that they could now get a Vais brake and would take the Stebby brake off and install the Vais if I would like to leave the rifle a couple more weeks. No charge for the rework and if I wanted it shipped that would be free of charge. That was fair.
Conclusion. Their workmanship and accuracy results are fine.
I did not appreciate the fact that they did not call me before installing the stebby brake, and did not point out to me that they had substituted a different brake.
Would I use them again? Yes
Did I come away from the deal with the feeling that I was a valued customer, No.
Perhaps years ago they tried to make customers feel welcome and wanted. Maybe if I bought several guns and had them do a lot of work it might be different. Quien Sabe?

I have used Hill Country more than 5 times and have always been very satisfied. Matt there has always treated me like a special customer or at least made me feel that way.

After one custom rifle and a couple re-barrels, I would say they are top notch.

They have been in business for many years and they have an excellent reputation among bench rest, varmint and big game shooters..I have never used them personally but have heard about them for 40 plus years...

Rest assured anyone in any business will run across those who cannot be satisfied, or refuse to be satisfied or will try to black mail someone into a freeby...It sounds like to me somebody is unhappy, but the odds are that Hill Country Rifles are just getting gouged. When folks go to the internet as opposed to working things out with the other party or in the courts it usually a sham...

I sent my sporterized springfield to them for accurazing. they worked and worked on it but could not get the thing to group: the same problem I was having; anyway, they kept working on it and discovered that when the rifle was rebarreled the gunsmith fouled up the threading. They, I suppose, rethreaded the barrel and reinstalled it. Now, it groups very well and they did not charge me for the extra work.

+1 on the good side from me.

Sako 75, restocked and accurized, a true 1/4 minute gun.

Based on a similar thread about Hill Country Rifles on 24 Hour, I just sent two rifles to them for work. That other thread had many guys say very good things about Hill. My rifles are now in San Antonio, and should make Hill today or Monday.
When I called Hill asking about the work I needed done, Matt was VERY agreeable with everything I asked them to do. Nothing complicated, accurize one rifle and install a new barrel on another.
I like supporting gunsmiths who have a good reputation, as Hill has.

Matt has done seven or eight of my rifles from Tang Rugers, to pre 64's. Work on all resulted in the advertised accuracy and some were even delivered early.

Highly recommend Matt and his staff at HCR>
