I have seen lots of old 270 win. pre 64s that have been customized or just beat up to where there is no collector value any more. As well as 721 Remingtons . most have 24 inch barrels and are sort of heavy for the caliber. I would think it an easy conversion to the 270 Weatherby mag.
The old model 70s shoot great. So turn the barrel back a turn cut a new chamber open the bolt face. Might need a little work to make it feed but you would have a flat shooting accurate rifle for less than a mk 5. Anyone done this ? ...tj3006 ?

A quick look on Gunbroker shows 5 Weatherby's in 270 WBM between 795$ and 900$
Tough to buy a rifle and get all that work done and compete with those on Gunbroker.
Now if you already had the rifle and did some of that work yourself then there you go you can get into a hot rod cheap.
Sounds like a fun project. Of course then there is the WBY ammo or brass which ain't cheap either.

If you are running a factory 270 barrel what would setting the barrel do to your stock fit?

The neck OD of the WBY is less than the Win. Not sure how that would look if you set back. The body should clean up without setback.

I doubt you would have much feeding issue.

As usual just my $.02

I built a 270 Weatherby Mag on a pre64 M70 action. It worked and shot great.

These days I'd be inclined to just use a pre 64 270 the way it is.

Agree. I bought a very used but very accurate Mark V in 270 Weatherby for $850. But now I want a synthetic stock, can't let well enough alone.

TJ,
I may be wrong but I don't think you have to set the barrel back, just rechamber it, but I have not checked the specs!! Open the bolt face, maybe do some work on the bolt stop, tweak the rails and perhaps lenthen the magazine and throat..that work would run probably run a bit less than $250 with my smith.

I built a 300 H&H on a pre 64 mod. 70, shot it for years, a real tack driver..YOu can do abou anything with a pre 64 action as they are all magnum length..
