All, I'm not familiar w/ pre64 M70s, but ran across the opportunity to buy one and am wondering if it's a good deal. It was built in 1939 (standard sporter model) and had a serial # under 1200. The caliber is .270 Win. The gun is in excellent condition (at least according to a friend that inspected it), but the stock was altered to have a cheekpiece professionally installed in the stock. The price of the gun is $600 and includes a 4-12 Redfield scope. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think the gun lost a lot of it's value as a collector due to the stock alteration, but am wondering if $600 is still a deal? Thanks for any help. Best Regards, Lou

I think $600 would be about right if it had the original stock. With a bubba'd stock, it has lost a lot of collector value. $500, I think, would be more in line. Pre 64 stocks are not that hard to come by, saw at least 3 of them at a local gun show a couple weeks ago. But the Redfield 4-12 is worth something, too, so maybe 6 with the scope isn't all that bad.

With the 4-12 Redfield, I think $600. is not out of line; without the scope, yes, $500.

I'm not totally sure of this, but I don't think a 1939 M-70 was factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts, so it sounds like the receiver has been altered, too. Seems like it's lost most of its collector value, so if you wanted one for hunting, I think you could do a lot better by just purchasing a current production CRF Winchester for that price, or looking for a later year pre-64 for not much more money.

Thanks for the feedback! I think I'll pass on this one. Hopefully I'll run into a good deal on a featherweight (big O'Connor fan) some day! Regards, Lou
