Well, I got that one to work anyway.
It was just a quick one, I can't get outside for good pics till we get some decent weather.
Any way I picked that one up today. It's a yougo mauser 98 in 7X57 with an old dayton Trister trigger, and a nice but noty really my style stock. To much roll over on the cheek piece.
but if she shoots i will have it reshapped abit.
I got it prety cheap, so if she shoots it should be tons of fun. Barrel is 23inches.

nice find.... a 7x57 in any style wood is always good. looks like there's enough lumber in that "fish lure" to reshape into just about any style a guy would want.

Fish lure !
Thats prety good ! I need to shoot the thing.
I can only asume by the stock ans some of the parts used that it was done some time back in the 50s or 60s.
It has a dayton tristar trigger. I already have a #1A in this cartridge and a have a custom in the works.
But this one has a little more barrel tahn the other two.
I have allways wanted to shoot the 154 grain Hornady , never had a rifle that liked it very well.
My #1 puts 140 grain b-tips into teeny tiny groups.
I am about to walk out thedoor to go find some of those hornady bullets...tj3006

That's an older Fajen aristocrat stock.

It hasn't been made (that I know of) since Fajens was bought by Midway.

Many a custom gun sported that stock back in the '70s

that's pretty much what i was thinking, too...probably 70's.
that "fishlure" monikker came from my days in target archery, back in the 70's&80's a target bow was called a fishlure because of all the wildly fancy paintjobs the manufacturers were putting on them. lots of 2&3 tone airbrushed shadow lines and tie-dye type color schemes, and of course, lots of shiney chrome plated wheels and limb pockets and stabilizers sticking out all over the place like catfish whiskers....so we called them fishlures....
most of the "so-called rifle experts" around here still think that's what "custom sporter" is supposed to look like! a regular classic stock means the gun "ain't much"....!

not the thought that came to my mind LOL . . . Big Grin (just not a fan of the huge rollover cheekpiece - nothing particularly wrong with the rest of the stock)

All that said, I do love the 7x57 and hope you enjoy the rifle!

thought it was likly a fajan.
Its alrights except for the huge cheek piece.
But it does come up real well.
If it shoots I might keep it that way.
The rifle has a prety long throat, I can't get to close to the lands , but i have seen many a rifle shoot real well, that way. I loaded up some 140 grain balistic tips with H-414, and I will also try some 139 grain Hornady ILs
I would like to try some of the 154 grain Ils soon...tj3006

Well, I like it because I'm old enough to remember the class associated with stocks of this design. I purposely wouldn't have one made but, for the sake of nostalgia, I could live with it. Hope it shoots well for you. My 98 has a very long throat but, gives accuracy with bullets as light as 130 grains and really likes the 154 Hornadys.

joe dean, i'm in that same age group, i think allot of us on here are.
on the nastalgic plateau, it's great! everyone should have a rifle in thier collection that is from that era. i just built a "fish lure" of a very curly maple laminated thumbhole finished natural with walnut tip and cap, complete with a big 'ole hump of a roll-over cheek for my 6.5x.270 improved just because i wanted one rifle with that style of stock and that particular wildcat fits well into that era of stockdesign chronologicly. actually it's quite comfortable to shoot on the bench and off hand. and it's different, that's for sure!
all that said, the 7x57 deserves to be in a nice minimum dimensioned classic piece of english walnut or similar.

I probably should have mentioned here that i already have a sweet shooting Ruger #1A in 7X57
And am in the middle of a build with a VZ-24 action and a english style stock with about as little wood as posible.
Both of those rifles have 22 inch tubes and this one with a 23.5 inch should put me in a position to use the cartridge in just about any reasonable way.
I think the longer barrel should put lighter bullets out at some prety good velocity, enough for some prety good open country shots on mule deer.
And the shorter barrels are good for all around use.
I get well under moa with My #1 pushing 140 grain balistic tips right at 2900 with 50 grains of H-414.
I am starting a we bit lower with this mauser but would not be to suprsed if i end up at about the same place.

TJ. Nice rifle. A man can not have too many 7x57's. Wink The more the merrier. My three are somewhat fussy about the pressure level of teir loads. What works in the M70 Featherweight is way too hot for the custom Mauser and nowhere near enough for the Ruger #1A. all are accurate though with the loads they like. 'm using W-760 which is supposed to be the same as H-414, but the best I can do in the M70 is 2800 FPS and that load will lock up the Mauser. I'm thinking of loading up strictly 170 or 175 gr. bullets for the Ruger if the gun decides to like them. Kind of make for a real get close and look 'em in the eye type of hunting. We have a spot not to far from the house where there are some feral pigs that escaped from a play for pay game farm. I'll pick up a bear and Moauntain lion tags as well, none needed for the hogs but it saves hassles with the game warden if you have a big game rifle and a few tags even if you're only hunting hogs. Besides, there are a few bears and lions in that general area so I just might get lucky. I know that the lions have been raising hell with the deer in that area so who know? I can probably call one in ith my coyote call anyway if I can sit long enough.

I have not seen your model 70 , of coures, but I am guessing it likly has a short bore throat,?
Meaning you need to load them prety short.
You probably know that increases preasure.
The throat on my #1 and my yougo(are quite long) I will see to it that the one i am building too...tj3006
