Is the difference between the 62 and 74 of much note?...for some reason i was under the impression that the 74 was the more powerful cartridge of the two.

boomer453,
The 9.3X74R shooting a 285gn FL will give you a MV of 2280 and a ME of 3290 compared to a 9.3X62 which will give you a MV of 2330 and a ME of 3435. However in the 286gn FL they are identical in MV at 2360 and only 14lbs difference in ME with the 9.3X62 being the highest. The 9.3X62 is also an excellent cartridge and unlike the 9.3X74R it is used primarily in bolt action rifles. So the bottom line is the 9.3X62 has a slight edge over the 74R in MV and ME with the above exception. If you like the 74R and will settle for two shots go for it! DEAD IS DEAD! I hope this is of some help. Take care and God bless.

I was just handling one of the Blaser K-95 rifles yesterday(Sat.) and it is a really neat rifle, but, I think it is a bit too light for the 9.3-74 as my Merkel loaded with the 286 Nossies at 2375 mv. kicks about like my .338s. So, I think the Blaser is perhaps better chambered in 7-65r and I am thinking of buying one, if I can somehow save up the necessary cash. It is, I think, a superb deer rifle for the steep country here and I prefer the cocking device to the safety on the Ruger No.1, which I do not think is safe in B.C. conditions.

I fear Ray has an excellent point, here. Today's best single action, the #1, was specifically designed to deal effectively with rimless cartridges. After all, back then, no one could have foreseen the current, at least on this thread, burst of nostalgia for the old, very effective, rimmed rounds. And since there is nothing New Age, or Cutting Edge malarky about the 62 mm case, his advice really is the best. You'd have to be a completely impractical, dreamy, nostalgic nutcase to insist on sticking with the 74 in your upcoming single. Only thing worse would be to do it in .450/.400 (he wrote with a misty look and a tear in his eye while delicately sipping his morning Earl Grey's).
