Any concept that introduces, or tries to introduce, a paramilitary element into hunting sport is anathema to me. I think it cheapens our sport. Everytime I hear of a "scout rifle" I think of Teddy Roosevelt and doughboys in campaign hats riding horses with '03's slung over their backs and dodging Mexicans in the Texan scrub. (Yeah, I really oughta get out more) Anyway it is, as has been said up top, a solution to a non existant problem. For the same reason I refuse to own any caliber that has a military origin eg 223, 308, 6.5X55, 7X57, 30-06, 303 British, inter alia. But I do make an exception for my 2 Govt Models in 45ACP. I mean that just makes SENSE. Hey, but that's just me. Cheers pete If Chuck Norris dives into a swimming pool, he does not get wet. The swimming pool gets Chuck Norris.

I own and have used a scout rifle to take game. The only quirk for me is the lesser performance of the long eye relief scope during times when the sun is low in the horizon and the scope performance is effected by dim and/or stray light. I generally enjoy using a good peep or ghost sight system on most of my rifles during times of good light when in close cover and/or closer ranges; but, I generally prefer to switch to a lower powered scope during times of dim light especially when hunting black bears or whitetail in a woods/mountain setting. The field of view w/ a 2.5x scout scope using a German #1 reticle in good light (to include your open weekside eye) is massive. On the otherhand, the field of view during times of dim light (scope alone) is extremely poor and tunnel like. In addition, having the scope so far forward makes the eyepiece more susceptible to stray light and glare.

I like the Steyr Scout, but that's the only one I've shot with the scope up front that wasn't unweildy and poorly balanced. It is the only Scout I've seen that I don't dislike. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

I can understand a preference to one rifle over another, but how can someone dislike a rifle? Well I guess maybe senator Kennedy. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

Guess my scout should know it is an inferior, light, handy, quick shooting gun. I have used a 1.5X, 2 to 6X pistol model and a 2x scout (Burris) scope with complete reliability. Just haven't had any problems. Packy

I've two mil-surps set up scout like. They are not real light or short and the IER(Intermediate Eye Relief) scopes(a Marlin 1.5X and a 2.75X Burris) probably stick up to high. But so far the images/optics have all been clear and bright. Point click, they are faster than reciever mounts. I particularly like the 1.5X scope on a MOA swede. I think the lower power lets one bring in the field of vision quicker. To me the scout concept is to fire on target quickly, not glassing a target. If you want to see it and shoot quickly, I say scout. Best-o-Luck
