I have seen both barrel band and screw-on front sights. Is one preferable over the other? How common were each?

I Don't know where to ask this question: I'm an inquisitive retired schoolteacher interested in 19th century British military and colonialism. Please Pm if willing to answers questions.

Thanks captdavid

Get yourself Jon Speed's "Mauser Archive", and "Mauser Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles". These two books will answer a great many questions, and blow your mind in the process. You won't likely find them in a library, and they are not cheap!

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
