Can some one please tell me what happened to the 170gr.R.N bullets???
I have uesd them as well as the 150gr.version for many years with great sucsess. However now that I'm down to about 25 I can not find them anywhere. I've been to every reloading supply store within 150 miles and I've searched the net all morning with no luck.
So... This is a Desperate cry for help!!! Looking high and low for: 170gr.Round nose bullets for a .270 win.

Also,,Before the debate even begins..I just plain like a big bullet, preferably but not nessisarily with a round nose.In almost every cal./rifle I have. From the 63gr.r.n's in the 22-250 up to 250gr.r.n's in my 8mm x 57 mauser.

I tend to stay in the brush , with shots less than 75yds.(90% of the time less than 40).At that range the big , slower bullets realy plant em' in their tracks with min. damage to the yummy portions .

So you see ,for me personaly there's realy no need for the 3000fps.+ 130gr.

I will agree however,in open country ,(again which we have little of here in central Mo.),the 130gr. with a healthy dose of H-4831or IMR-4831 is hard to beat.
A 140gr.out of my 6.5x257 is hard to beat in this area as well. But thats a subject for a later descussion.(by the way, it hammers deer inside of 100yds with a 160gr.you guessed it R.N).

Help me out if you can and thanks..

People have to buy em for the mfgs to make em. The advance and marketing promotions of the 7mm Mag and 280 Rem just about sealed off 170gr 270 bullet sales.

Well, there's bad news tonight. The last mention of that bullet was in the Speer #9 manual circa 1974. The circa 1979 #10 manual makes absolutely no mention of that bullet. so, I would imagine that as a guess, they were discontinued shortly after 1974, subject to what stock was on hand.
So, probably the best chance of finding some it hit the gun shows. Sometimes little treasures do show up.
Now the next question is, how many do you want? I found a few at a gun show about a year ago, but haven't decided whether I want to something with them. I took a count and I have 69 of these bullets.
Why don't you PM me and maybe we can work something out. If I'm very slow in answering, my puter got trashed with a worm last night and while I have it up and more or less runing right now, it just might crap out on me again. I don't feel it's safe to communicate by E-mail until I get this thing worked on

Last I looked you can still get 160gr partitions. I suppose I should load up on those while I still can.

How about Barnes origanals? Used to make heavy for caliber bullets.

The 160 Noslers are the biggest I've seen available for the 270s in the past few years. I think I'm going to try loading the 160s this winter.

I have a 270 Wby with the old chrome bore from the 50's. It has a 1 in 12 twist barrel that will not stabilize 160gr Nosler Partitions. Im not sure if it would work with Speers 170 round nose or not. Most German Mark 5's were the slow twist. I had a Jap gun with the 1 in 10 twist and the 170's worked fine. Most 270 Winchesters had the 1 in 10 twist and should stabilize all 270 caliber bullets. That 170 should be a good one on elk in heavy cover.

Those 170-grain RN were made by Speer (decent bullet, too). They have not made them for at least 30 years now!

Paul,

As others have mentioned, Speer hasn't made 170s in years. I would keep an eye out on auctionarms or gunbroker. Used to see them on ebay, but they don't sell bullets anymore. Barnes used to load 160s & 180s in their original line. As dean119 mentioned, Hawk lists some heavy .270s and Nosler still offers the 160 partition load.

I use them, and they work great. I just tried Noslers 'accuracy load' right out of their manual, got sub-moa first try, and stopped right there. Cheapest load development I ever did! Cool Better yet, it shoots pretty well in all of my .270s, and it works pretty well in three brands of brass.

As is mentioned above, I also favor long heavy bullets at modest velocities that strike exactly where I intend them to. It might not cloud up and rain every time I pull the trigger, but my freezer stays full just fine. Wink

Thanks to all who tried...

They were in fact Speer ,circa 1970's as you all know. I was just taking a shot in the dark that someone had hit a web site I hadnt found.
To no avail..(sigh)..It looks like if I'm going to shoot the "round" ones it will be the 150's.
I will check out those partition 160's as well.

Again thanks.

The 270 will push the 160 Semi RN partition to 2950 or so.....

Believe me, if it is hunted in the lower 48, that combo will drop it!!!

With a sectional density of .301, and that velocity and that bullet shape and construction...it will nail elk big time.. so it will work on the biggest deer everm to walk in the state of Missouri!
