Need a new rifle, 7-08, 270W, or 243?
Looks like someone new is coming into the family and we'll need a new rifle.

The lady is a short stature, so I'm thinking 7-08.

But my wife has a 270Win.

Grandkids are growing up, which makes a little .243 appealing.

What to do? I've got 2 months to decide.

For what it's worth, I discovered the 7mm-08 about ten years ago and now I own three carbines in it. It is easily my favourite calibre in recent years and while it wouldn't be my first choice, my son has taken two elk with my Savage Sierra carbine with 140 grain A-Frames. So the 7mm-08 would get my vote. Cool

The 7-08 comes in some very nice small packages and will take about everything that doesn't bite back. I have seen it take all the planes game except an Eland. It would probably do that with proper bullet placement.....Tom

I'm getting to be a big fan of the 7x57. The more I play with it, the more I like it. As the 7-08 is reaaly a short 7x57 clone, I think I would go with that cartridge. But what do I know? coffee

Are you suggesting that a 110 lb. lady would like a 9.3 B&M? or 458B&M?

7-08. Especially is you roll your own. Your cartridges can be tailored up or down depending on the quarry and the statue of the shooter.

I really like the 25-06 for about anything in North America especially if you load your own. I'm not a real fan of the 243 or the 270Win. The 270Wby with 150's is another favorite of mine.

I'm an unabashed 7mm08 fan.

For the grandkids, load some 120grBT's to around 2400fps and you've got a light recoiling potent rig.

Eventually --perhaps so

i am not a 110 lb lady but I love my 416 B&M.

She might not like hunting, she might want a bigger rifle, or she might love the 270 WSM you would have all the bases covered.

Or she just might not like that rifle--are you telling me YOU wouldn't like a 458 or 50 B&M?

I would go with a Remington Model 7 in 308.

I would have the new shooter shoot the Remington Managed Recoil load, until they can handle full power 308 loads.
And there is no rush to go to the full power 308 loads. My young nephew and I have both, each killed several deer and several wild pigs with excellent results with the Remington Managed Recoil load. He killed a nice turkey at 88 yards with the same load as well...

It kills deer and wild pigs as good as full power 308 loads, out to 125 yards or so.

Recoils less than a 243...

I see that the M70 Compact has a 13" LOP but the M70 Feath 270WSM has a 13 3/4" LOP.
Maybe I can have my wife (uses 13.5" LOP in Tikka) measure her forearm against the new lady's forearm.

Is that a reliable guide to LOP?

I'm confused, who's this rifle for? Your wife, daughter-in-law, daughter?

The 243 is a perfect compliment to the 270 and uses the same powders.

I don't find the 7-08 really kicks less than the 270, though it is better suited to reduced loads.

That is good advice except that you can't get the managed recoil loads. Backordered everywhere until November. I hope they run more this time as I plan on getting them for some new shooters in my family.

Sorry for confusion, Brad. Three generations are involved, my wife (270Win) who hunts Calif and Tanzan, a son in TZ with a fiancee who will be learning to hunt, and grandkids/nieces/nephews who might visit Calif or TZ.

The rifle is for a daughter-in-law, who will learn to hunt in TZ. However, when nieces and nephews (grandkids to me) might visit, then the gun might get loaned out for a first gazelle/impala.

We roll our own. Hodgdon provides some H4895 reduced loads, and for extreme low-loads there is TrailBoss.

for multipurpose like that the seven.
haven't quite moved into the 1980's just yet and use the x57 version it goes up and down better than the 08 version.
having said that i started my girl out at 8 on the 308 with 125-150gr bullets and went from 31-35 grs of 4895. then walked her up from there.
straight into another round.
the 7.65 argie i built for her at 13.
she has finally come around to the x57 we use the hornady 139gr interlock at 2750 in hers [and she has asked about rebarreling and ackleying]
but she still won't let go of that argie.

I would pick the 7mm08 and load it with 120 gr TSX for the kids and 140s or 150s for adults. With today's great bullets and powders the differences between a 7mm, 270 and a 6.5 are minimal.

The short action 7mm handles very well - Ideal would be a Winchester mod 70 or a Kimber Montana!

Kimber has a 13.6" Length of Pull, while the M70 compact has a 13.0" LOP.

She has a similar length forearm to my wife, and both are about an inch shorter than my son or I. I little extra length of pull can be a good thing and can keep an elbow from pushing too far back. But how much is a little length?

We just did another test, too, and it turns out that the little lady is 'left-eyed'.
What are the good options for 'lefty' rifles in these calibres?

Nice shooting.
It reminds me a lot of my wife's Tikka Lite in 270Win. She does 1/2 MOA at 100 yards, 3400 fps, 110TTSX.

Accurate rifles are interesting.

Now back to those lefty questions and LOP !

I tend to agree with the above post, with scopes eye dominance isn't as important as with shot gun or pistol.

That said Wincheter short actions can be found--grins back to the 270 WSM.

Cross and 16Bore,

the plot thickens with your comments.

I've known many lefties who have used right hand rifles out of necessity but shoot them left eyed.

How many on the list have shot right-handed even though their eye was left dominant?

I am left eye dominant and shoot right handed. Don't think I could ever shoot left handed. You have the money to hunt calif and tanzan--buy all three it's just pocket change.
