I am not a long range shooter. Kind of like the Shaquille O’Neil of shooting. I shot 88 percent bc they are all slam dunks.

But I have taken the heads off 2 turkeys w/ one of my 375 Rugers, Shot the liver and bottom lobe out of a running deer with another 375 Ruger, and put three shots two running on a big European boar in failing light with a third 375 Ruger dropping it in a clear cur before it hit cover, finally a neck shot on an elk with a 375 Ruger.

Then there is the 405 buck, but that was a different post.

I have come to love the 270 Winchester and now killing limited but multiple species with both the 30/06 and 270 think they basically overlap. Never read O'Connor my elder family members were Keith fans. I was a Boddington and Dave Perzeal kid. They often when I was young wrote in disfavor of the 270 Winchester. Jim Carmail never really said anything about it. Which I took as a bad sign.

Hopefully, my new 270 Winchester will be introducing me to a nice Red Stag next October.

I'm a 270 fan. I think the 30-06 only outstrips it with 200g and 220g bullets. Never had an issue killing black bear or elk with 150g Partitions at 3000 fps. Elk out to 400 plus yards (not long range anymore, but it used to be).

Regards,

Chuck

Even a mono-metal user can concur with good advice and practice. tu2

PS: I thoroughly enjoyed both O'Connor and Keith, and both gave excellent advice. My son and I killed a lot of plains game with a 270 and 338. (But we also agree that the 338 was more dominating. Back in the day the 250 Nosler Partition in .338" did it ALL. Today we use 225gnTTSX for the same domination, and in 270-- well, we don't currently have one in Africa to use the 129gn LRX.

Change to a custom SS Lothar Walther barrelled 9.3 x 62 Mauser then go kill a moose or elk at 300 yards with the Mauser, worthy big creature tool for having dominion to get meat

Biebs
After having nearly every caliber made, when i went for my "light" barrel for a 3-barrel set-up for my Blaser, the 270 got the nod. Hard to beat.

My "light" rifle was obtained from Biebs years ago. It is a Blaser K95 in 270 Winchester.
