Hey guys, what is the quality of the savage 11 series hunters ( the wood stocked version)? I am considering one in .308 in the GL (lh)and was wondering if the $339 price tag is too good to be true. Thanks.

I guess it depends on your definition of quality. If you're defining it as a functional, durable rifle the model 11 certainly qualifies. Accuracy in most cases is very good to superb--better than many expensive rifles. The price you quote is about average for a model 11GL. Is it worth $340? Absolutely. Savages are notorious for delivering alot of performance for the money you spend. Since the model 11 comes with iron (actually some plastic) sights, I've often been tempted to get one and put a peep sight on the receiver.

For that kind of money what's the risk?

The two new Savage rifles that I have owned in the last two years had very poor quality and finish. The first one was sent back and nothing was fixed so the rifle was sold.

The second is the 10ML that I just got. On balance the rifle is the only game in town in smokeless ML's. It's rear "pillar" is 1/32" short, the forend goes to the left, the rear mount base screw needed to be retapped and more.

If I wanted a $300 .308 and in left hand at that I would buy it. It might be just fine.

I purchased an 11G in 7MM-08 for my son. The stock was the ugliest thing I have ever seen in a wood stock. We removed the stock sanded it down to bare wood and stained it dark black and applied several coats of clear finish. It looks great now, and shoots like a dream. Yes, they are ugly but that can be fixed.

I just want a handy rifle that i can use for hunting out west and back east for stuff <elk and <300 yards. I want the rifle to be able to shoot into a 8" pie plate all day at 300 yards, be light enough to carry all day, and be reliable enough to not mess up when i need it to function. I also want it to be cheap enough so as to be able to put good glass on it. From what you say it seems to be able to do that! If i went for beauty, then i would just get a Sako or a Weatherby. But, i cant afford those. I would also like wood and blued metal, because i dont like the feel of stainless and synthetic.

I have a Savage model 110E. It came with that crappy brown painted/stained stock. I sanded it down and found it to have great wood underneath. It was so nice that I clear coated it and left it blonde. I get a lot of compliments on it at the range. My shot great for years and finally it needed rebarreled so I had it pillar bedded at the same time. They are worth the money, but they require work to make them look good.

All of the Savage Rifles I have shoot sub MOA. That says alot for any brand of rifle.

I wouldn't hesitate in buying another Savage.

Good Luck!
