Vapodog,

Thanks for posting what your doing. tu2

The reality is the lead ban is likely to increase regardless of whether anyone believes it has proven science behind it our not and then tries to disprove it with no science at all. So it's good to think ahead if you want to continue hunting.

Someone on the "fire" was kind enough to suggest two other mono bullets but when I get to their website they loved their bullets more than I did.....with (after shipping) prices of $2.00 or so, I decided that machining to a weight I liked wasn't at all a bad idea. I made a bullet vice ifor the mill and was quite successful in making 200 grain bullets of fair accuracy.....(they varied by no more than 1/2 grain.....and that was mostly in deburring.....

A quickload figure of 2815 FPS and 59,000 PSI using 63 grains of varget was found and folks...THIS IS NOT TESTED...do not use that load without working up.

I'm using Hornady brass with 74 grains water capacity....S&B brass has considerable less capacity and will potentially result in greater pressure.

The big issue here is the recoil with the 200 grain bullets s far more polite than the 250 grain loads.....and that just might translate to better bullet placement.

So I ordered a .366 chucking reamer to make a 5-up jig for the mill....us old retired farts have to have something to do in the winter months!!!..... dancing

Vapodog,
UH that was an apology!!
Ray

Hey all, I don't see his thread as totally political at all, its about another freedom taken away from the American hunter and the use of a type of bullet that many of us like to use, that a state gov. made illegal..I feel the same about lead shot..

Order them right from the website. They were very accommodating when I emailed. Got back to me right away, they stock most but will do a run for you. I really like them in the big bores. You can also order direct from Cheytac.

Nice to hear that you are going to all copper bullets. I use them too in some of my rifles, but I am still going to hunt with standard cup and core bullets also. Like you said, we all have a right to do as we please.

progress....the new milling jig to make the 200 grain Barnes bullets is now working and the net result is quite gratifying....the bullets turned out at 202 grains and fabulously uniform

These do indeed reduce recoil a bunch and make this fine rifle into a more manageable firearm.

I commend you on finding a new way to cause you to shoot more. In my opinion, any reason to shoot more is a good thing.
I cast and buy every new powder that comes out, to get more shooting in.
I was very sorry to hear about the eagle, as we used to have a LOT of Goldens in our area, too.
When I was a kid, alooong time ago, they were considered a pest, or varmint species, mostly because of the stories of lambs and calves carried away and consumed in the nests. I believe most of THOSE stories were based on parts and hair-bundles found in those nests. The cowboys had quite an imagination, in those day. Many even had stories of the young being carried off and seen BY themselves, prolly based on attempts by the eagles to do so!
I was thinking, though, about the eagle in the link.
The average cartridge used by hunters of deer, antelope and coyote in the areas that there is a hunting season, and golden eagles live is 6mm through .30 cal, with bullet weights of 100gr through 150gr being, by far, the most popular.
Cup-and-core bullets have been the most popular, by far, and are still used, even with the new monometal being more used than ever before, both handloaded and factory loaded.
I sure agree that a conventional bullet kills by fragmenting, and expanding into the mushroom shape we all know and love, but the object of design is for the bullet to lose no more than about 20% of it's weight so that it can continue its passage through the nervous/circulatory systems to increase the rapidity of death.
Many bullets lose more than that, often exceeding 50%.
Except in the case of the Texas Heart Shot, most of what I have seen have been pass-throughs, as these are pretty small animals, and their fleshy parts have been pretty narrow.
Many times, due to whatever reason, two or three more rounds have been required to bring the animal to bag.
In the gutpile, there have been many particles, but not ALL as I have 'found' many pieces in steaks, some pieces have been copper, though.
If 1/2 of the bullet becomes pieces, and 1/2 of THAT remains in the gutpile, which is actually more than intestines, etc, as some hunters 'bone' their game, that would leave 50-75 GRAINS of lead in the area. A couple more bullets would equal as much as 100 GRAINS!
If lead is THAT toxic, the game was lucky they died from trauma, instead of poison.
Humans, of course are largely immune to it, at least in those doses.
I have NO DOUBT WHATSOVER that the eagle died of lead poisoning, but I would wonder what other factors are involved.
Golden eagles are killer predators and prefer to kill their own food, but are not stupid.
Why would they bypass available protein, if presented? They WILL scavenge.
Some animals that hunters shoot, are not recovered so would present themselves to be used by scavengers, which would be affected by the lead, therefore would be scavenged by others.
To cause the effect this eagle showed, would require it to consume QUITE a bit of lead-infused flesh, in a short period of time. Not one or two days, of course, but say....30 or 40 days....maybe?? That way it would accumulate.
A gutpile is....maybe 30-40 pounds??? About 900 pounds... in a month or so??? That's figuring on one scavenged opportunity per day. Thirty times 150 GRAINS of lead is a bit over 1/2 pound of lead consumed. No wonder the poor bird died!
His center of gravity changed, and he HAD to scavenge as he couldn't fly!!!
I do suspect, though, that a LOT of the CG change was caused by all the protein it consumed.
Clearly, something is at work, but not all the usual suspects.
I would NEVER accuse your friends of lying, but maaayybeee they have ulterior motives to affect their objectivity, and cause them to end the investigation.
In the meantime, you are thinking of your shooting, therefore shooting more, and having fun doing it.
I applaud you, and MAY even join you at some point,
Have fun,
Gene

Possibly....but I won't see it as I have him on ignore.....

I have filed the boat tail on many of my loads.....they shot quite well but I've put the project on hold pending better weather and many other projects in the works.

Interesting post vapodog. Have you played with boring monometal bullets on a lathe to reduce weight or was shorter bullets part of the plan?. Can't beat bug hole groups in a 9.3.

actually I never gave it a thought.....but now that you suggest it.....I don't think one can remove enough metal unless it's bored from the front end.....and that would likely cause dramatic effects on the BC

You would know better than I. 20% is a lot of reduction. I imagine that the hole would need to be drilled all the way in to the base of the tip so as not to affect the balance. Just a curiosity I've had for several years. I should buy a mini lathe.
