22" 7X57

Chuck Nelson22" 7X57
No signs to the contrary, but am I pushing it?
Your simply achieving what 7x57 is sensibly & realistically capable of, with a strong action & acceptable modern load pressures.
Nothing abnormal.

Jerry Liles49 gr H4350 is my usual load for the 7x57 with a 140gr Hornady, REmington brass and Remington 91/2 primer. It's a pleasant load, very accurate, with absolutely no evidence of pressure. I've tried up to 51 grs but accuracy fell off. I don't get those velocities though, running about 2800.

wildcat junkieJust about what I was getting from a 7mm-08 W/a 22" tube.
Seems reasonable to me.

"Up over" is a fairly broad brush stroke.

and meant to be... he's at hornadyh factory 708 vels, in a larger case, with a slower powder... THE reason i like 708 over 7x57 is that factory ammo is actually loaded to spec
i wouldnt run away from a 2950 7x57 load with 4350, if all else looked safe
what was the thrust of your comment?

I just didn't know if you meant it hot, mild, perfect.......
The above helps. Thanks.

jeffeossoChuck,
i think its a pretty good load .. not smoking, but if compared to "factory" .. well, skip that .. its a keeper load for me
Chuck--Wow! You have a really "fast" barrel.
49 gr IMR4350 has been my standard load in a 7x57 custom Ruger #1 with a 26" barrel but I only get something a bit over 2800 fps with the 140's.
This is a good lesson on how variations in barrel, chamber and components can make a dramatic change in results--another reason to work up to your final load carefully.

The reamer/chamber/throat probably has allot to do with it.

Depends on the amount of "freebore"/throat.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

jeffeossosure would -- if a CIP throat, its designed for long bullets.. if SAAMI, it MIGHT be shorter
With no other signs, looks just fine. The velocity checks out also, as a poor man's pressure barrel. I've loaded that load (with other 140 grain bullets) for many years.

and I see no reason why one cannot comfortably take 7x57 to operating pressures approaching 65K psi
[like 22/250,6mmRem,270win,.300weath,.416rem,etc]

Joe DeanAs was mentioned, it depends on the chamber and how it is throated. My military chambered barrel has no problems with 49 grs. IMR-4350 with a 150-154 bullet, producing a little over 2700 fps. That load has worked nicely for me on elk.

I forgot to say my magazine is 3.20" and to get close to the rifling it takes that length.
Nice looking rifle BTW but, the bolt handle is on the wrong side.

handwerkI'd say you found your load alright. My 1938 M70 gets it best accuracy with 49 g of H4350, but I'm running at 2820 FPS. Nice rig you have there.
No wonder! It's left handed! As a matter of interest, why would you limit yourself to the 140 grain bullet? My 7x57 shoots the 175's very well, and the 160's quite well.

PatagonHunterHi,
Agree with Joe Dean and Peter. In my Mauser military chambered barrel I use the same load as Joe with 160 grs bullets and get 2700 f/s without any sign of overpressure. Also use R22 with 160/175 grs bullets. Perhaps the best powder for over 100% density loads and safe pressures. 2750 f/s with 160 grs bullets and 2650 f/s and 175 grs bullets. By the way Nosler NÂș4 Manual shows almost 2600 f/s in the 22" barrel 7x57 and 175 grs bullets.

PatagonHunterAh! All my loads are on WW cases and a 24" barrel. The cartridge OAL is 3,25" with 0,04" clearence to the grooves.
