I might have an opportunity to buy a NIB 356Win Model 94 Winchester. I notice this wasn't a popular round and ammo is hard to find. All you can find is winchester 200gr. But I figure for a reloader like myself, it would be fine. Seems to have some umph compared to a 30-30.

bigcountry,

It should be a fine saddle rig even for elk in close quarters..like the BoB Marshall Wilderness. Speer makes a 220 grain flat nose bullet that can be pushed up to 2,300 fps. Sort of like a .358 Win. in a lever action. A good open aperture sight and you'd be in business.

I have a Win. 94 in .356 Win that I used to hunt deer with. It is a very nice rifle and will put down deer in a hurry. All I ever shot was 200 gr. factory ammo since I do not load. I have one box of 250 gr. but never used them. In fact, almost all of my shots were pass-throughs. The deer bled like crazy before it died and I lost quite of bit of meat. I actually shelved my .356 and started using a .307 Win in the same model rifle and actually had better results as far as not tearing up meat. I believe the .356 was intended for larger animals than your average white tailed deer.

I had 3 of them during the years. I used H335 and AA2015 and the 220 gr Speer with good results.

I'd buy it.....they're great shooting guns that have gone up in price over the past couple of years (I've seen many go for $500 - $600 in excellent(+) condition).

The 356 is a rimmed version of the 358 Win. In fact, you can use the same dies for both.

I have a M94AE and it likes the 220 gr Speer FT with IMR 4895. It is one heck of a close range deer, elk, and bear round. Due to the light weight of the M94, it lets you know when you pull the trigger.

Speaking of triggers...it's one of the worst I have ever put up with on a rifle!

if you go for it .......I got an extra set of dies I'd make you a good deal on. By the way it uses the same set as does a .358 Win. just a different shell holder.
