I just received my copy of the SCI magazine Safari. There is an article by Irlene Mandrell about an African hunt. The purpose of the trip was to test the new CZ Long Range Hunting System. Shots were taken out to 748 yards with one shot kills. There was no discussion of what this gun was. Has anybody heard of this? I imagine it will be promoted at SCI.

Hmmmmmm,

Haven't heard either. Pure speculation, but perhaps they put a 338 Lapua Magnum barrel on a 416 Rigby chassis? If they used their standard sized barrel blank it would be fairly stiff in that caliber. If that is the case, it would be pretty easy to pick up a used Rigby by CZ, and have a Krieger or Bauska barrel put on. In a McMillan stock that sort of rig would be fairly accurate. Again, pure speculation.

Count me in as not impressed. Mostly because I don't find any reason to celebrate that kind of "hunting".

There is an article on it in the current Rifle or Shooting Time (edited..sorry for the error).

IIRC (not likely), it is a trued rifle matched to a calibrated scope as a package. The one in the article on the safari was a 300 WM. I do remember the report groups impressed me.

I also read an article about this new rig, though I don't remember where.

This new rifle is called the "Ultimate Hunting Rifle" and is supposed to be guaranteed to shoot 1MOA at 1000yds if premium ammo and quality optics are used. I think CZ even has custom loads available for this rifle.

It's a model CZ 550, with set trigger and detachable magazine, chambered in 300 Win. mag., but has been trued and tolerances are extremely tight. The guy that wrote the article I read, said the gun was sent to him for a hunt in Africa with the president of CZ U.S. (I can't remember her name), along with a NightForce scope that had been zeroed @ 100 yds. but had the bullet drop chart out to 600 yds.
They evidently killed a number of animals between 500 and 600 yds, and all were one shot kills and the gun reportedly was very capable of shooting as advertised.

They did mention, that of course accuracy was dependant on the indivduals shooting skills, ammo and optics, and also something to the effect that CZ was not promoting shooting game at ranges farther than each persons own limitations and skill. There just offering a rifle that is capable for those who find long range hunting challenging and enjoyable. (That's not their quote, I'm just paraphrasing)

I read an article in the either Peterson's Hunting of Outdoor Life about it just recently, but I can't remember which.

Anyway, said the rifles will be sold as a package with a top quality scope, which I'm assuming will be Nightforce, because that's what CZ sent the author. As previously stated, the rifle he used in Africa was a .300WM with ammo custom loaded for/by CZ.

I like the idea of a factory rifle with tighter tolerances, etc. but I'm not real hip on encouraging guys into thinking they can buy this rifle/package and they're automatically capable of taking (let alone making) 800 yard shots. It's been my experience that most off-the-shelf rifles already offer more accuracy than most hunters can utilize, the majority of which have no business shooting beyond 400 yards. YMMV.

That would be Alice Poluchova, the prez of Chay Zed USA.

I can just see the gnomes at CZ-USA strapping the tolerance tightener on a CZ 550. "Looks extremely tight to me, Ern". <---humor

MY CZ 550 Varmint can kill a gong at 530 yards. Would I shoot a critter that far away. Only if I had a range finder and there was no wind.

Back to the still.

Peterson's Hunting Feb/Mar 2006, page-30
By: Dick Metcalf

Called the CZ Ultimate Hunting Rifle (UHR)

Says the UHR is based off of the Model 550 which was derived from the Mauser M1893 action.
Detatchable of fixed mags depending on caliber, and a set trigger. It has a 24 inch barrel. The prototype that the author used was a 300 Win.Mag and the article makes reference to no other calibers. The "system" consists of a rifle, a premium scope, and premium ammo. Two things worth noting is that-

1) while the article says "premium" ammo, CZ actually sent him a test batch of 200 grain handloads for his test session.

2)While they sent Dick Metcalf a Nightforce 5.5X22X50mm scope, they make no reference to it being included in the package. All it says is "premium" scope.

That's pretty much the article, minus the super shots that he made at 500 yards using provided drop charts. Hell, I can do that with a couple of my factory rifles with factory shells. The whole thing seems to me as a way get rich from the growing interest in long range hunting.

I saw the article today at my local Wal Mart.I think the other posters have covered most of the items in the article. They did say that the ammo may be for sale from CZ along with the gun.It looked like it had a wood stock. Several recent post have complained about the rough quality of fit and finish of the CZ rifles. This should make those posters a little happier. Who said "only accurate rifles are interesting". If that is true; this should be a very interesting rifle to many but not me as I am left-handed and I did't read anything about left-handed models.
