It would have to be my Winchester Custom Shop SS 358STA in a McMillan stock and a Burris Signature 1.5x6 It pushes 250gr A-Frames to 3060fps behind 90gr of H4350 and 215 Federal primers.

Sounds like a great hunt, hope you are going.

I'm putting mine together right now. Started life as a Husqvarna 640 in 9.3x62. Had the stripper clip guide milled off, the top drilled and tapped for a set of Talley Ultralight rings. Installed a model 70 style two position saftey and just sent off for an Edge McMillan and coating in Cerakote. Expect for a 4x Leupold to ride on top and it to run with Barnes TSX or Nosler Partition, 286 gr. Should come out just under 7.5 lbs. unloaded.

Should I expect the shots to be longer then 300 yards, might could be talked into running 250 gr. pills and a scope with a few more Xs. Spare scope and rings would be a must, even though the rifle wears functional irons.

Out of a vault with over 100 rifles, I have several which would work fine for that application.

The one I'd probably pick, though, for a place as damp as B.C., is my Steyr Pro-Hunter in .376 Steyr with a Leupy 2x7-X scope. It is short, light, handy, and so far reliable. It also fits me well, is very accurate, and should be pretty weatherproof.

I'd take about 20-40 rounds of 235 grain ammo along (to camp), as well as at least that number of 270 or 300 grain bulleted cartridges. If I had to take just one bullet weight, I'd pick the 270-grain ones.

The rifle has iron sights as well as the scope, so backup sights are already taken care of.

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

Thanks, Cobra.

I forgot to mention that my Steyr .376 rifle came with 4 of those handy, quickly removable 5-shot rotary magazines. I'd take a couple of those along, for quick reloads or bullet weight changes in the field.

BTW, for most of my years hunting in both the U.S. and Canada, I have used relatively few of my available rifles. Mostly ones in the .270 cartridge, 7x57 cartridge, .30-06 cartridge, the .300 Wby., and the .358 Norma Mag.

My .376 Steyr has been replacing them all in the last few years for actual serious hunting purposes.

The other 100+ are just for fun and because I LOVE rifles of any ilk (and can).

I have made mixed bag hunts to both B.C. and the Yukon Terr. I used a Ruger 77 tang safety model in 270 Win. It had been restocked by Al Biesen. I took 2 moose, 1 caribou, 2 sheep and 3 wolves with it. No bears showed up though but I would have been comfortable taking an interior griz with it. When I hunted for Sitka deer on Baranoff Island I used a 375 H&H because of the possibility of a brown bear which are much bigger and in dense forest, coming to the call.

I have lived and worked in the remote bush all over BC for over 50 years, I have seen the odd Grizzly in my time. The largest one I ever saw was on the Bulldog Lookout road off Highway 3 between Grand Forks and Castlegar in the Waet Kootenays, in 1974. This bear and I have seen lots of northern coastal ones, would have gone an EASY 900 lbs and maybe more, he was half again larger than any others I have seen.

So, while I have packed a Mannlicher-Schoenauer 65.x55 carbine hunting in that very area and often go back there to hunt and remember, I usually take my Merkel drilling in 12-12x9.3x74R with 286 NPs at 2400. I am not particularly afraid of Grizzlies and have stood beside a friend when he killed one with a .270 and my 150 NP handloads, but.........

All in all, though, a good man with a good .270 CAN do whatever needs doing in BC and I love my pair of P-64 Fwts, in synthetic stocks and am taking them to the range tomorrow.

9,3x62....best all around calibre for any continent. A real thumper on deer, just right for bear, and a bit more than sufficient on anything 2000 pounds or bigger.

I've hunted several times in BC and the Yukon, and each time it was with my .270. However, if I were to go back to either, I'd almost certainly be carrying my M70 chambered in .338 win mag. It is my all-time favorite hunting rifle. It is topped with a Leupold 2.5x8, a Brown Precision fiberglass stock and Lilja fluted stainless barrel. It's a great hunting rig.

Dewey-
Have you ever handled a Cooper Model 52.
They are a heavy mountain rifle at 8 3/4 lbs gussied up with a scope, sling and ammo-7lbs 13 oz naked in 06 but they also come in 338-06.

Accurate as all hell. It is just one big anschutz that points right.

Brno 22f in 8X57 with 4X Leupold would also be
pretty cracker jack.

Sincerely,
Thomas
