The Savage website lists the 111FCNS and the Long Range Hunter(which may be a G model) as the only 111 series rifles chambered in .300 Win Mag. Barrel material is described as "carbon steel".

Hi. Unfortunately it not "carbon steel". I can assume, that a barrel is made from Steel(42CrMo4)4140-BUT exactness will not prevent. Thank you for an answer, Kristian.

Perhaps you should contact the Savage technical department and ask them. They do not accept e-mails. Savage Arms 100 Springdale Road Westfield, MA 01085

Hi. And I know about it, but a postal contact is unreality - I am not in the USA. Clever diller is needed from the USA, which knows this question, that improbably.

The question was not "what grade of steel" the question is "What barrels(brand Steel)are set on standard brands Savage 111G 300WM. ? Apparently he wants the BRAND OF STEEL for some reason _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

Oh, I thought it was a translation thing and he wanted the type of steel. Savage makes their own barrels I believe, so the brand would be Savage. I will ask them who supplies the steel to get that brand or if they are indeed buying a brand of barrel from a barrel manufacturer. They may not want their competitors knowing who they buy steel or barrels from.

Crucibel is one brand of steel, but you may be correct about a translation problem. Maybe he does acctual want the type of steel _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

Yes. I now stand before the choice of rifle of Savage 111g 300wm. Foremost I am interested by the resource of barrel and possibility of the extreme use +50С degrees Celsius- -75С degrees Celsius, water, snow et cetera. Knowing the brand of steel it is possible to say with certain exactness, that expects this rifle in the future. Thank you for an answer. Kristian.

Hi. I am interested by a brand steel. 1. I am sure on 100%, that analogical barrel of rifle MarlinXL7 30-06 is made out of steel 4140,barrels MarlinXL7 30-06(22",1:10) and Savage 111G 300WM.(24",1:10) similar,-however on the site of Savage there is not exact information about a producer steel. 2. There are opinions, that barrels are made steel is Carpenter and Cruciable. Thank you for an answer. Kristian.

There are only three types of steel used in barrels AFAIK -4140, 416 stainless and one of the PH stainless steels [17-4 ?] . Crucible Steel as such no longer exists having been sold last year and is now under a new name . 4140 is made to various specs ,such as aircraft quality etc which would be more important than the maker. There are of course different methods of making steels which have an influence also. I've never seen comment on any special quality as far as barrels go. Crucible did make a special 416R for barrels which had better limits on sulfur levels. Gun makers may also buy from different steel companies at different times depending on availability and cost. The only one who can tell you is the gun maker if they will tell you. Crucible Industries LLC is the name of the new company . http://www.syracuse.com/news/i...tries_llc_makes.html

While it is suppositions, but I think that it is steel 4140-Savage 111G 300WM. P.S. A Mauser successfully utilizes steel 8620.

I heard from Savage today. They use 4140 chrome-moly steel in all of their carbon steel barrels. There are two major suppliers in the United States. The one they currently use is Jorgenson Steel. There is no specific brand name other than Jorgenson 4140 for firearm use. This brand of steel apparently works well for them because they have some of the most accurate rifles in the world. Jorgenson also supplies many of the other rifle and barrel makers in the USA.
