Best 4 Calibers
Since everyone has been posting what 1 caliber they would choose, I wanted to do somthing a bit more practical. If you limited to only 4 Calibers, what would they be?

Here are my Choices

22-250, 270WSM, 338-378 Weatherby mag,and 416 rigby.

IF, I could get a reliable supply of good components at reasonable cost, I would choose as the gentleman from Norway did and be happy.

As things are in BC-Canada, and are likely to continue and get worse, my choices would be as follows and I include the specific firearms I want/have them in.

1. .223- C7 assault rifle or similar AR platform with lots of spare parts and about 3 topends with barrels. I don't have this, but, am thinking on geting it.

2. Browning-Miroku Mod. 7500 combo O/U, .308Winx12 Ga. I have this and it has good irons and an excellent, simple scope mount and 4x Leupy. This is a practical, reliable and easy to use and backpack "meatmaker" and I am surprised that Browning did not make more of them for sale in Canada and the USA..VERY useful piece.

3. .338WM-custom Dakotas by Martini Gunmakers, irons, scopes, Micky stocks, with Martini quality and using 250gr. bullets. I have one and would get another, but, have dozens of highend CRF hunting rifles now, including five motr .338s.

That is it, probably get a .22LR adaptor for the AR and call it good, this is four cartridges in four guns, including the 12 bore shotty bbl. of the Browning.

.22 rim, 25/06, 7x57, 308 in cabinet at moment. As needs change I might easily change rifles, the 25/06 can be horrid with unsuitable bullets, the 7x57 a friend hates as its hard butt plate hurts him Mad

I have a desire for a 6.5x47 in a nice walnut and blues steel best rifle & a 375 for the Africian dream……………… Cool

30-06, .243, .222 or .223, Pellet rifle--5mm. Being limited to 4 I'd forego the .22LR as I get more use out of my pellet rifles as I can shoot them in my yard. I also cast for .22 cal so the .222 or .223 with cast could do double duty where I'd be using .22lr--come to think of it I'd go .222 as my .222 shoots cast and my .223 does not. If the 4 choices is to include shotgun, I'd forego the .243 and have a .20 guage.

When you stop an think about Clem's selection ,It's down right HARD TO BEAT for a 4 gun battery !.

    I would of only perhaps added a combo Rifle/Shotgun , probably in 22/410 or .223/12 or 20 gauge !

    Great selection Clem !. tu2

...but I am pretty well focused on Africa. If allowed a designated local deer whacker, I'd want a 25-06 too.

All in Winchester Super Grades or Safari Classics.

And I am only addressing the rifle calibers...handguns and shotguns are a whole 'nuther deal.

O.K. 4 calibers not 4 guns, This leaves out shotguns as they are gauge. However I think it means handguns also so.

Here's another way of looking at it - assume you could could only own four rifles. For me, it depends on why that decision came about.

    1. Economic neccessity (which means I'd be lucky to hunt deer close to home and the big bores would be sold).
    22 LR
    223 bolt rifle
270 (I'd keep two to have a spare)

    2. If I moved to Africa to hunt and could only bring with me four rifles.
    7X57 (or a 270)
    300H&H
    9.3X62
    404 Jeffery

    3. If I didn't handload and chose to only own four rifles.
    22 LR
    223
    30-06
    375 H&H

    4. If I loved to handload and chose to only own four rifles.
    220 Swift
    7x57
    300 H&H
    404 Jeffery

    5. If I decided to keep the four favorite rifles I have in my safe right now.
    7x57
    270
    300 H&H
    404 Jeffery

    6. If the government passed a law saying I could only own four rifles.
    223 battle rifle
    308 battle rifle
    300 H&H
    404 Jeffery
