After my thread asking about very bodies .308s went so well, (thanks for all the excelent input and pictures),
I have been searching the Portland area for the right rifle.
I would love to get a NULA , but I simply can,t convince myself to spend that much money.A sako would be nice but hard to find and spendy too.
I stopped by a big gunshop today , one that stocks literally thousands of guns, and they have 3 different kimbers.
A 8400 longmaster classic for 875.00 a standard 84 for 800 and another model for just under 1000.00. I think that was the montana.
I did not see the rifles, he just looked them up in the computer.(I was on my 15 minite break,
Once the lady calls and I get my tax cituation finalized, I will know what to do.
The standard 8400 sounds great to me.
22 inch barrel light weight wood and blue CRF 3 position safty.
All what I want. If the taxes don't go my way , I might end up going with a hawkeye, saving 250 pluss bases and rings.
Tally,s.
I should have little trouble getting a kimber 8400 to shoot a couple decent loads.
say a 150 grainer at 2850 to 2950 and moa
and a 165 , at 100 less.
I would likly go to my 06 for shooting 180s
But not nesicarily.
This would be my grab it and go rifle, probably put a 2.5X8 VX3 on it.
Easy to carry acurate and enough rifle for any oregon game.
Probably would choose somthing else for elk, But with a 168 grain tsx it would be a very good choice even for Elk.
What do you think guy's ?

If you get a good shooter the Kimber Leupy 2.5-8x combo should prove ideal. I have used such a combination, no problems.
The only criticism I had was that it was a little rear end heavy, not much but it was there, other than that, great. It had a lovely wood stock, fed ok and grouped around the 3/4 - 1 inch for 3 shots. I spent $50 on getting the trigger tweeked and set at 2.75lbs
In my experience the wood blue are smoother in operation than the stainless Montana.
Good luck.

Kimber 84M and a Leupy 2.5-8, not a bad idea if I say so myself:

My 84 is a Super America which is why it has the Ebony forend tip. and the Glossier blueing.
It shoots 168gr TSX's into about 3/4" at 100yds. For some reason it seems to like Moly'd TSX's better than naked ones, I really don't know why.
Good luck with yours. If at all possible give it a good looking over before you buy it. The wood 84M's can vary a bit. If the stock is rubbing one side of the barrel pass on it. If the barrel is centered and the wood is something you like, buy and enjoy it.......................DJ

IMO, Everyone needs a "Go-To" rifle and you'd be hard pressed to find a better all-around caliber than a .308 or .30-06.

The "Goto" gun: it's got go to be the gun you trust to absolutely perform exactly the way you expect it to every single time. In my case it's my Remington M7MS in .257 Roberts. It groups in the 1/2" range with 100 gr. SGK's, 110 AB's, 117 SGK's and 117 SST's with H4350, all within 1" point of impact of each other.

I digress. The Kimber in .308 - you just can't go wrong there! Buy the rifle that tickles your fancy. Make it the rifle that you just can't help but pull out of the safe every time you think "I need MY rifle".

The Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x is a great scope - I have one and it may well be Leupolds best all around offering.

Regards,

Robert

Thanks Guy,s good advse DJ.
If i am gonna spend 800.00 on a rifle , I will give it a close look.
My tax lady called and I may end up either buying a hawkey or waiting till we get our federal econmic stimulas check.
But who knows. Usually when it comes to rifles, i end up with what I want.
I have 2 of the 2.5X8s already. One is on my Ruger RL in .257R and the other will go on my old JC higgins 30,06 when MPI gets it restocked.
I like the VX2s pret well 2 I have 4 of them.
A couple 2X7s a 1X4 and a 3X9.
I can't think of a situation where any of my lepolds would harm my confidence level one bit.

if by portland, you mean oregon, why not pick up an hk 21?
Big Grin
but if you want to aim, ruger does make a target model in 308. a friend got a 22-250 in that gun and after bedding and trigger work it gets a ragged hole at 200 yards.
just my opinion though.

I don't want a target rifle. To heavy for my purpose. I am not familiar with an H&K 21.
It could be that I wait for may when we get the government check.
But I am not sure yet. BY then the model 70s will either be here or real close.
I probably should just sit back and looking for awhile. There are a couple of shops out on the west side I have not been to.
And there are allways other things I want.
I have a mexican mauser I want to get worked on.
But I have a hankering for a 6mm Remington too.
I know of a #1B so chamberd that would be cool.
But A very nice .308is in my future...tj3006
