There was barely any light Thursday morning when I noticed movement beyond a small patch of sorghum, but things soon got even darker for this female coyote. When she stopped, a huisache covered much of her body, and I had just a sliver of clearing to thread a bullet through. But the 30-30 AI barrel and the Varget/150 grain BST load came through for me again. About a month ago, I was able to take a large bobcat at 297 yards.

The same barrel even impresses me on the target range, which is not easy to do – and it’s provided some of the best groups I’ve ever fired. Before deer season, after I switched from Ballistic Tips to Ballistic Silvertips, I wanted to double-check the drop at 300 yards (OK, 292 as my range needs some shredding and trimming of limbs!). Using an aiming point directly above the target, I was rewarded with the group shown below.

For years now, the 7mm Bullberry and 6.5 Bullberry IMP (6.5x30-30 AI) were my go-to cartridges in the Contender. But the way this 24” 30-30 AI barrel is performing lately, those 2 are soon going to be relegated to safe duty... Big Grin

Always liked the 30-30AI in a single shot. My first attempt at "wildcatting" was a 30 Herret in a Contender. It was a tack driver at 100yds. Never really tried further.

Looks like you have a winning package.

As usual just my $.02

did you rechamber the factory TC barrel? or is it an aftermarket barrel? I have the same gun and I was thinking about rechambering it to 309 JDJ

This one is a TC Custom Shop barrel. I also have a 23" SS TC barrel (special run for either Ed's or Midway) in 30-30 AI. Neither is a rechamber.

I didn't mean to wind up with two, but when the SS became available at a good price, I grabbed it. Now I don't know which I should keep and which I should part with as I really don't "need" two of the same.

BT,
you have a way with words,
as well as having mastered the ability to "whack N stack".
The photos aren't too shabby either.

Bobby you have many accurate barrels in different calibers.
The other part of the equation is the shooter is obviously pretty dang good at what he does also.

Great going, good to see your working on the yote population, as well as the hogs.

While mine is in the 14" version, I have found the accuracy to be on par with yours out to 150yds. As far as I have tested any loads so far. Heck I am even thrilled with standard factory rounds when used to FF cases.

If either of those will fit the standard Contender frame, and you decide which one you are going to let slide, keep me in mind. I don't think I'm too far away to come pick it up. Big Grin

Well which ever you decide, let me know what you want for it, I may be interested!

Bobby,

You live up to the cliche. Beware of the man with single shot. He only as one bullet and knows how to make it count.

I carried by T/C carbine around a bit this fall. Shot a couple of deer with it. Unfortunately it's a plain jane .30-30. It's so nice carrying a 5.5# scoped rifle around and it packs rather easily.

Shot one small doe with the last of my 130 TSX loads. Boy, it really liked that bullet. Punched my 4th tag with some Rem factory 150 RNs I had laying around. Would like to get it to shoot the 150 BTs, but it hasn't showed a liking to them. Might go with the 170 Speer Full Curl next year just to mix is up a bit.
