I would like to build a custom rifle on a Mauser action, but cannot decide on the caliber.
What are some European calibers between 7 and 8mm that can produce some good ballistics, are accurate and popular?
I like the 7x65R, but it's a shame about the rim...

I'll throw you a few:
the obvious ones are 7x57 or 8x57, however if you want something a bit more exotic, try these:
7.65x53
8x68S
7x64

Express. The 7x64 is the same cartridge as the 7x65 but without the rim.... But after you price 7x64 brass you might consider the 280 Remington, same ballistics much cheaper brass. But why do I speak of economy... have you seen the price in the U.S. of 450 No2 brass? [Eek!] Its Australian, [Bertram], by the way.

9.3x62, 8x60S, 8x64S Brenneke and of course, 8x68S with 220 grs A Frames ...

First three cases may be made outa 06 brass, if necessary.

How about a 318WR? Slightly bigger than an 8mm but a real classic and an awesome killer.

Not. At least in Europe, it's reverse. The 7 x 64 is an omnipresent bread-and-butter cartridge, whereas the .280 Rem is a quaint exotic. USA are but a small part of the world.

OOPS! [Confused] I forgot to look and see where EXPRESS was posting from. If I was on the CONTINENT I would go with the 7x64.

Go with the 8X 64 mm. You have a large selection of bullets to deal with all size of beasts, 150 to 250. It is like the .30 06 with out the mantle of a military calibre.

7x57 no feeding problems , no bullet tips mashed (you will with the 280) definately feeds ok, no discernable difference on game out to 250yds, pleasant to shoot, classic MAUSER cartridge, excellent resale value - need I go on...

Dane, thats a rimmed case, not well fitted to a Mauser ...

BTW the case is rather exotic without offering anything special.

I shoot some metrics...the 7x57 and 8x57 are a couple of my favorite for plainsgame and deer and antelope...

One of my favorite metric calibers is the 9.3x62. The 9.3x64 is one of the most wonderfull calibers ever invented and will win an all around rifle caliber contest any given day, and that includes our sacred 375 H&H....the 9.3x64 is an awesome caliber when one bothers to do a little research on it...plainsgame or Elephant, it makes no difference to this little number...

If I was restricted to one caliber to hunt all creatures on earth I suppose it would be the 9.3x64, it just has that balance...230 gr. bullets at 3000 FPS to 320 gr. bullets at 2500 FPS, a tough combo to compete with...
