I just wanted to get some input on this particular rifle from those that own one or who have used one in the past. I have owned dozens of centerfire rifles over the years mostly Winchesters and Remingtons, But have some Rugers, Kimbers and others. I have never owned a Mark V or fired one... After hunting this year in NE Oregon I'm thinking that a 340 might be a nice addition to compliment my Winchester Mod 70 300 RUM. I routinely shoot big bores 458 Lotts and up so recoil isn't my biggest concern its just are these guns accurate, reliable and worth the money? I like the made in Japan Mark V deluxe version the best and I have seen them around 900-1000. Any help would be great. Also if someone has one to sell PM me with what you got. I'm looking for a wooden stock hunter not a NIB collector.

Thanks Brad Smiler

www.gunsinternational.com has several 340 weatherby rifles listed for sale. Good rifle, good round, they are typically accurate. I think many are sold due to recoil but it is not at all bad.

I had a Mark V Sporter in 340 for a few years and used it on a bunch of stuff. When I retired and my hunting changed a little I decided to keep my 300 Weatherby and my 375 H&H and sell the 340. It was a good rifle, but just seemed somewhat redundant having the 300 and 375.

Like Crazyhorse, I have had a Wby 340 but sold it. I sold it to a friend that talked me out of it. It's an accurate, quality rifle. I still own 5 Wby mark V's and enjoy them all......Tom

I have a Wby .340 Sporter model that will always be a mainstay of my arsenal. I bought it originally to upgrade my .300 Winny after I came face to face with 4 Brown Bears. That encounter came out OK but I felt the need to have more bullet the next time into Big Bear country. With 225 or 240 grain North Forks or the old Barnes XLC it is deadly. I have taken a huge Alaskan Yukon Moose and several Bull Elk and Mule Deer with it. I shoot several larger rifles up to .416 Rigby so the recoil is quite managaable with the Brake. My grandsons are now shooting it at Elk so it will always be around. Good shooting.

Thanks everyone so far for the input. I see that you can stack your hunting guns depending on your location and preferences. Say 270win,300mag,375 H&H, 458 win. I'm leaning towards a 300 RUM, 340 Weatherby,416 Rigby and 500 Jeffery. If a 340 wont due a 416 Rigby with 300-400 grn bullets can cover the 375 H&H niche. Don't get me wrong I love and respect the 375 H&H but in Oregon where I hunt 200-450yard shoots happen more often that I would like and a nice flat shooting fast magnum would be nice. I've just about given up on my 9.3 RUM wildcat since I really don't need that much bullet weight and speed with all that recoil. I would much prefer to just go with my 416. I think that a 300/340 combo would cover a lot of game in my neck of the woods better than my 7mm/375H&H which would be fine. I sold my 325WSM because it just wasn't what I was looking for. I have owned a 338WM but again like the longer H&H length rounds go figure.

Brad, I used a 340 Wby Accumark as my Black Bear rifle for years in British Columbia. Up in logging country, shots can also be long. A 225gr TSX from a 340 Wby carries enough energy for a clean kill out at quite a distance.

Biebs:

I think you understand my situation. I was excited to take my 9.3x62 hunting this year but it was left in the cabin after the first mornings hunt. I broke out into clearings with 450yards between hillsides. Heck my hunting buddies little brother killed a black bear at 450 yards with his 300WM. Where I hunt it is really fast magnum country. If I lived in Africa I'd want more horsepower up front and close rather than a flat shooting 400yard rifle. I think I can squeeze some long range out of my 416 Rigby and 300grn bullets. I have hunted with my 375 H&H in the past with 260grn NP's but I think I'd rather have the sectional density of a 250grn .338 bullet than the increased frontal area of a 375 grn bullet at 300 plus yards. If I hunted western Oregon I'd be shooting my 458 Lott since 20-75 yards shots are the norm in the real thick stuff.

Brad:

I have a brand new 340 Weatherby Accumark. The only issue that I've had with it was we had to put a shim under the rear scope mount. I am just starting to get it on paper and, in fact, just got home from the range about an hour ago. The only load I have tried so far is a Weatherby case, 80 grains of Ramshot HUNTER, a CCI mag primer and a 225 Hornady Spire Point. I can tell already it is going to be a real shooter.
