One thing that helps "me" is to shoot a 22LR a whole lot. I feel kind of lopsided without a rifle in my right hand , so I carry some kind of rifle nearly every day. The 22LR allows the subconsious muscle rhythm to become natural.

So, my MAIN recommendation is to get lots and lots of trigger time with any rifle you can carry. I like my triggers to be as similar as possible and that does take some serious tuning.

---

Perhaps your rifle just doesn't like that particular bullet, or that particular bullet weight. The only way to know for sure is to try other ones. That in itself can be a good thing because it gets more Trigger Time for you.

If you can see the actual bullet holes on the target, that can create mental stress whether you are aware of it or not. Adjust the Point of Impact up and out of your visible sight.

Perhaps you are just shooting too close. Some rifles just shoot better a bit farther out than 100yds. It can be due to paralex or other things, but you could try shooting at 200 or 300yds.

If you are not shooting at "the corner" or a Square Target, that could help you. Just print out some 2" solid Black Squares on a page (maybe 6 on one page). Then adjust the Point of Impact to be outside your visible area while getting Trigger Time.

Reduce your number of shots to either 2-shot or 3-shot groups.

Clean your barrel every 6-9 shots while at the range. Not a hit and a miss, but a thorough cleaning. That will also let the barrel cool quicker.

And while the 270Win is setting aside cooling or being cleaned, dance a soda-pop can out at 100yds off-hand with a 22LR. Use a sling on the 22LR and get a good stable foot position without leaning your body up against anything.

Practice and have patience.

Try glass bedding the action and let the barrel free float completely forward of the recoil lug. Also have the crown recut with a piloted reamer - NO "grit on a brass screw" stuff. After free floating the barrel, if it still doesn't shoot then put 2-4 business cards under the barrel about an inch from the forend tip to give some upward pressure. If that improves things then put a glass bedding pad in that same place using the exact same pressure.

(The way to duplicate the pressure is to clamp the rifle upside down in a vise at the action. Hang weights on the barrel at the forend tip until you can just slide the cards out. Then bed the forend with the same amount of weight hanging from it. Any decent gunsmith that does glass beddign should be able to do this.)

I did not know this but most factories cut the crown with a reamer centered on the outside of the bore. There being no guarantee that the bore itself is centered in the barrel, this can give an off center crown. By using a piloted reamer the crown will be completely centered on the bore.

I have had this operation done to three factory rifles so far - a Model 70 .30-06, Model 70 .375 H&H and a Model 700 .300 Win. Mag. - and the results have been amazing. The .375 went from a 3"-4" grouper to shooting groups in the 1 1/2" range or less. The .30-06 improved with free floating but improved even more with 8 pounds of pressure on the forend. It went from shooting 1 1/2" groups to where it now puts four shots touching.

The Model 700 REALLY improved just with the free floating and new crown. I have a target posted here:

Look at the attachment up in the heading area of the second post to see a picture of the group.

Not saying that your .270 will do this but I have been VERY impressed with what can happen simply by recutting the crown properly and a good glass bedding job.

W/ the same rifle you've mentioned I've had excellent results w/ 140 grn. NBTs on top of H4831 @ 2900 fps MV. This load is very accurate at 200 (less than an inch on a good day).

I've also had some pretty good accuracy w/ the 150 grn. Hdy SPILs on top of H4831.

If you haven't tried H4831 & R22 w/ the NBTs, I would defintely give it a try.

I also try to seat them really close to the lands.

Good Luck!

Lack of accuracy can be caused by a number of things. Here are some to consider:
How is your benchrest technique? Have you achieved tighter groups with other rifles?
Is the trigger pull-weight excessive?
Can you rule out loose scope mounts or a faulty scope?
Is the front action screw tight?
Are the groups round in shape or in strings? This is very important for diagnosing a problem with bedding.

While many 270's are capable of fine accuracy, 1-1.5" groups are certainly adequate for deer hunting.

Did you break in the barrel properly? How hot is it while you shoot?
