OK, I've been searching for a manufacturer of a rifle chambered in .300 Weatherby, that is not in a Weatherby rifle.
Any know if anyone else is producing them?

I don't know if Winchester is currently making them, but they did a couple years ago - I had one and they came with 26" bbl. Sold it before I fired it. Wish it would have been on 340 wby.

Winchester and Remington no longer chamber for the .300WBY. Pity. I've got two (700s). Both go sub-1" at 100 (five shots). The older one (700AS) shoots better - alot better - and has filled several PU truck beds with deer for us.

Used market?

Sauer 202 and Blaser R8 both currently chambered in 300 wby and the Sako did a limited number in the 75.

Or buy yourself a pre-64 M70 in 300 H&H and have it rechambered (kind of a sin though as much as I like the 300 Weatherby cartridge).

Brother used to have a Dumoulin made on a FN Mauser magnum action - sold long ago. Brother long gone, too.

What is wrong with the Weatherby rifles? You probably won't be happy with a stock rifle any how, so get an action and have it built to your specs in 300. You obviously have something special that you like, so build it.

The Vanguard technically isn't a Weatherby, it's a Howa 1500.
I have one. Very good rifle. Built like a tank. I replaced the tupperware stock with a B&C Medalist to help with recoil and get a better fit.

I don't know what Vanguards go for nowadays. I bought a display model from Wally-World for $299 about five? years ago.

Also the Austrian rifle maker Voere: http://www.voere.de/en/rifle-technology.html

Funny that there seem to be more European rifle makers than American that still produce 300Wby.

Vanguard will run between 4-500. Throw another 200$ for the B&C medalist stock and you'll have a very accurate and reliable rifle.

If I lived in the Oregon rain forests (which I did for over 25 years) and wanted a new .300 Wby chambered rifle, I too would probably choose this Vanguard:

http://www.weatherby.com/produ...2/series_2_stainless

I actually did have a .300 Wby in Oregon (and still have it), but I went the sacrosanct route and got a .300 H&H pre-64 M70 which Roy rechambered for it about 60 years ago.

Hey Dennis,

It wouldn't take but a rechambering along with modification of or replacement of the magazine box to turn a new FN M70 Winchester Extreme Weather SS factory chambered in 300 WinMag into a very nice wet weather 300 Weatherby.

Does the customer not realize that Vanguards are not really Weatherby rifles? I mean, its a name, they're made in Japan by Howa and use identical nearly EVERYTHING to a Howa 1500. Just curious...why such a disdain for anything with the name Weatherby on it, besides the cartridge? Hell if he is that desperate for something how much does he want to buy my Win M70 300 Wby for? lol

Maybe DWright does not like the Weatherby profile on a rifle?

Another option would be a Howas 1500 in 7 mm rem or 300 win mag & rebarrel/restock - the Howa does look different to a Vanguard. That could be done for reasonable cost.....

if re-barrel/re-stock was an option we'd be having a totally different conversation on the many, many possible options.

Heh Jim,
I wouldn't mind it, but if I were to even mention a gun with a stainless metal, I'm afraid this customer would throw up just a little.

You could do a Winchester Supergrade or Sporter in the same fashion. Punch out a 300 Win Mag M70

Hey Dennis,

Sounds like MileHigh has the perfect solution with the M70 Supergrade in 300 WinMag - modify as above and your customer should be happy.

Cheap and easy.
Find a mint 721 300 H&H (they have the right length barrel 26")
Rechamber to 300 WBM
Fit a 700 Classic stock to it ( easy).
Well under $1500 and will shoot as well or better than anything made today.
My 300 H&H done thus although not rechambered! (I would never own anything Weatherby !). California pimp guns.

Bullseye Gun Shop in Brooksville, Fl. has a nice Ruger#1 in 300 Weatherby. Ph. 352-799-2225. It is unfired--I used to own it.

Just curious, but does anyone know if the Remington 700 Classics in .300 Weatherby had 26" barrels? I saw one at a gun show a week or two ago and gave it more than a passing glance...

I have purchased a couple Sako's, model AV in .300 Weatherby and had superb results from both. One I have used in Africa and the other is going to Alaska in less than 2 years. Check Gunbroker, Gunsamerica, Gunsinternational and Cabelas Gun Library. You can find them, they show up quite frequently. These older Sako actions can be found at a price that is acceptable and they tend to shoot very well.

Find out what rifles the customer likes and have one rechambered. A little mag work and it's ready. One note, it's best to have it chambered to SAAMI spec (i.e. longer freebore) so factory ammo can still be used.
