I'm looking at a used one of these rifles in .308 Win. How good are they? This one is a wood and blue rifle, honest hunting wear but overall feels pretty nice. Doubt I'll buy it as it is a cartridge I don't really need or want but the price has got me going Hmmm!!!

I know nothing abut Steyr's.

I have one of the pro hunters in .308. I am very happy with it. Its accurate and smooth shooting. Other Steyr rifles I've shot and handled have all been top notch. Steyr knows how to build a rifle.

Steyr is under new ownership, an Austrian gentleman whom I've met and shared a few drinks with. He is a great guy and really committed to building the finest hunting and military rifles in the world. The Classic Mannlicher rifles (and most are not Mannlicher stocks) have match grade barrels and are guaranteed to shoot MOA with factory ammo out of the box.
Very nice trigger pulls and Steyr has a new treatment for their metalwork, to include barrels, which make them virtually rust proof, scratch proof, and just overall tough.
And the Pro-Hunter / Scout models are just as well done. I have several in my store up for sale, and have shot several recently. Great stuff. Mike

I have a ProHunter (Safebolt)in 6.5X57 very accurate rifle, 1/2MOA with reloads it likes, have found nothing that goes over 1 1/2" at 100 yards. Excellent trigger and very smooth cycling bolt. Nothing bad I can say about the Steyr Safebolt.

My Steyr may be the most accurate rifle I own, despite several with aftermarket barrel, squared action, actions bedded, triggers worked etc. It is has a great action although a little stiff. Once you get used to the tang safety/bolt-lockdown it works very well. IMO it is the most accurate out of the box rifle based on my own experience and from what others have said.

Mine is the wood/blue older Forester

and it likes 200 gr Accubonds

or, truth be told, it will shoot anything well, I like the 200 gr Accubond.

Work up to those loads like I did please.

Edit to add: I would really like a Steyr in 270 win, it would make a perfect Elk rifle! stir

+1 for the Steyrs.
I own several in both the SBS and older models and I can't fault them, 222 RemMag to 375H&H.

Better quality than Sako IMO

I can vouch for steyr as well. I had an SBS 96 Forester in 300 Mag. It shot lights out. Action was as smooth as butter and I liked the tradition of the butter knife bolt handle. I sold it about 4 years ago but now I'm wondering why.

Another +1 for Steyr. I have a Scout, and only recently sold an older SBS model. Outstanding triggers right out of the box, good solid feel, better than average accuracy...really no downside other than the fact that they are quite nontraditional and some people are turned off by that.

I sold most of my guns to help finance an African hunt recently. The Scout was on the short list of guns that I would not consider letting go. Definitely a "go-to" rifle.
