Gents,

I'm looking a a full stocked Styer M72 chambered in 30-06. It seems to be a fair price for it and it appears to be in good condition.
The only hang up I have is the fact that it's a 20" barrel. Not sure how much the shorter barrel will handicap the caliber. I know the 308Win does fine with the 20" barrel and I know that many companies out there make 30-06 with a 22" barrel on them I've not seen many, if any with a 20" barrel though.

So my questions for you are, Is the M72 Styer a decent rifle?
and
Will the shorter 20" barrel handicap the caliber enough where it will not be an effective rifle out to say 400yds on deer sized game?

Thanks for your time

The 72 doesn't get good press....supposedly the worst Steyr ever made.

That might explain the price being lower than what i've seen for other Styer rifles.

Thanks Biebs.

Is there anything in particular that makes them a poor choice?

All depends on the loading and the rifle.

Personally if one is hunting an area that allows for 400 yard shots.

There are far better rifles then a 20 inch carbine. I own a few shorter barreled ones.

I have an 1895 Winchester carbine with 22 inch barrel in 30-06. It chronographs 62 fps slower than a 24 inch takedown version. To my thinking, not enough difference to make a difference in the field.

22 inch has been the standard length for a 06 for may decades now.

If 2" of barrel length made a difference @400 yds on a deer I'd be f#@&ed! This is really silly shit.

Don’t know anything about this particular model rifle but I had a 20 inch barreled 30-06 long ago I don’t remember the exact velocity now but it didn’t loose much compared to longer tubes.

The Plastic rotary magazine spindle with follower wing is a problem as by now it has undergone age hardening and will tend to crack or simply disintegrate. Some also have a U shaped buffer in the front of the magazine well and that too will crack and fall apart. I am considering having someone machine one for me out of a alloy billet.

A 30-06 with 20 inch barrel is plenty of velocity out to and beyond 400 yards.

The industry standard velocity for a 165 grn 30-06 is ~2800 fps out of a 24 inch bbl. Now let's knock 100 fps off that for 4" less of bbl length - we are at 2700.

A typical 30 cal 165 grn bullets has a minimum impact velocity between 1600 and 1800 fps

Even with the pedestrian BC of .410 (nosler partition) velocity is ~1925 fps at 500 yards. The noslers minimum impact velocity is 1800 fps.

Your 20 inch bbl 30-06 has plenty of killing capability @ 400 yards and beyond for deer.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Thank you for that bit of information.

Sounds like you have one. How is the gun otherwise? Trigger? accuracy?

This one i'm looking at balances beautifully and comes to the shoulder quickly. The wood has a little figure to it but the stock could use a good cleaning.

Arguably the ugliest rifle in my collection. Mine is a heavy barreled 9.3x64
The barrel is typical Styer hammer forged so excellent
The stock is comfortable but ugly.
The action is odd in that it was a radical departure from the original 1903. The action body and bolt forms a cylinder in a cylinder with a ejection port. It is very strong ! The bolt is front bolting with 6 milled lugs in two rows .
. One of the lugs is milled way to make space for the controlled feed and extraction setup. Yes this thing is a controlled feed and extraction action.
The extractor is massive engaging about 1/3 of the rim circumference. So in effect 5 functional lugs.

The magazine is all Schonauer Rotary albeit with plastic spindle and follower. Mine has a Euro push forward set trigger. It points well, sits comfortably and shoots well but man it's FUGLY !

Though it lost the charm of the old Mannlicher Schoenauer, I'm not sure why you think the M72 is so ugly. Can someone explain that please?

IIRC it at least lacks a magazine release intruding on the stock profile as later models do.
