Deertick, I'm interested in knowing also as I have a BAR in '06. I'm thinking they probably will not be too reliable in the BAR but we'll never know until someone tries them. Remember there is no adjustment on the gas system and it's designed to take enough gas pressure from a standard round to cycle the action. Let us know if you try them.

The BAR will cycle with 30 gr of AA 5744 and 130 gr bullets. Hornady makes a 130 gr .308 bullet and this load chronys at 2200 fps. According to my recoil calculator it has not quite 6 ft lbs of recoil, a .243 has about 11 ft lbs! I had to load some up for someone that had shoulder surgery. H4895 would be a good powder too, but it takes a little more of it to get the same velocity and the more powder you use, the more recoil. You need to either load some up yourself or have a friend do it for you. I believe some of the guys here are using shotgun powders, which you can use less of yet, with good results also. Remington is producing reduced recoil ammo too, if you can't get someone to make you some.

Thanks for all the ideas ... I'll be looking forward to working up a load that'll be light ... good for my son, but also sounds good for general plinking and practicing to get familiar with the gun.

I'd try the loads and see what happened. Even if they don't cycle the action, you are doing no harm to the gun. Your youngster can always cycle it manually.

The Remington Reduced Recoil rounds have 42.5 grains of some long skinny stick powder and a bullet with the "exact" profile of the Hornady SSP bullet, but with an a cannelure.

Seafire did a write-up recently about using Blue Dot in the o6 for reduced recoil. He used a Remington 150 grain Core Lokt bullet. I tried that, the Hornady SSP and the old version of Remingtons 125 Core Lokt bullet as well as the Nosler BT. The Core Lokt and SSP usually shot the same or close on accuracy for a given load in my testing.
It shot well at the 50 yards I can shoot here at the house and when I scaled the loads to shoot in my 7.7X58 Type 99 Sporter and the load that was the direct ratio was also the most accurate in the 7.7.

I could be wrong, but I think the Blue Dot will reach peak pressure too soon to operate the BAR action.

As a side the 125 Remington and the 130 SSP were within 1/2" in penetration and the SSP had a bigger diameter cavity by about 1/3 where I shot them into the wet clay at my range here at the house.
