My new 9,3 has one, and I was at first a bit mortified. But when I consider how slick and quiet the thing is, I am tempted to just leave it as is. Anyone have a reason other than aesthetics -- e.g., a feeding failure -- to replace the follower?

It may be made from nylon which slides easier. It may not be there as a means of being cheap but for the purpose to reduce friction and improve feeding. Just my thoughts.

Look at some of the chain tensioners on motorcycles - many are made from nylon.

The metal followers for the 550 haven't been available for a long time. It would be a miracle to find one, assuming someone would sell theirs. The plastic one works, so why worry about it?

I go have one that I would sell for a thousand dollars though! Smiler

Kimber also uses a plastic follower in the 8400, at least they did in my 338 classic.

I have four rifles with plastic platforms (followers) they are; Sako in 375 Happy & Happy, Kimber Classic in 308, Sauer 202 in 6.5x55 and a Tikka T3 in 6.5x55.
All of them work .
More importantly all of them shoot straight. Would they be more accurate with a metal platform? Would they feed any better? No and No, ergo no problem.

Bill,

In a fit of anti-plastic bigotry, I contacted CZ about mine, and was told no steel follwers for 9.3s are available any more.

So, I have decided to stick with my plastic follower. It is slick, it feeds like a momma bird to her chicks and it is what I am stuck with.

My Steyr 9.3 is in the same plastic canoe. And it ain't overturned yet neither.

So, I've decided that I'm going to live with both of them happily ever after.
