Just a bit of rambling on my High Country from an older curmudgeon.

Put in a lot of time and study before purchasing this rifle in 300 Win Mag. All the pros and cons, rifle, cartridge and cost. Hoping I made the right decision.

After arriving at home with it, here are a few thoughts:

1. The rifle looks nice – camo and all the weather proofing. Action is smooth. Trigger 2.5 lbs - crisp. Nice surprises.

2. For physical reasons – gun stocks Length of Pull are always too long for me – Drop at Comb too low. With the added components provided in the box – in a few minutes - I was able to adjust LOP and DAC. This rifle now fits ME beautifully. Well done Savage.

3. Seems everybody wants a LIGHTER rifle and that’s what the manufacturers are giving us. Thank goodness - so much easier to carry. Right? Guess what? I know because I visit them - gun shops are full of hardly used “light” rifles. Why? I suspect recoil. With the many BIG GAME cartridges - as rifle weight goes down – recoil goes up. Simple math. Like you, I don’t like recoil either. 300 Win Mag? One reason why I chose this rifle was because of its bare weight – 8.5 lbs. All up – I’m at 10.5 lbs. Many complain – saying that’s too heavy. I say – if 2 more lbs is too much – go to the gym. Your rifle will lose weight.

4. Bad weather is keeping me from the range. Handloads are ready. Rifle accuracy? TBD. Hopeful.

Thanks for visiting.

Have a good day everyone.

Yep, brand is unimportant to me. Function, fit and fun are all that matters.

Roger that Frank.

I'm optimistic on the upcoming accuracy testing.

My being a long time fan - I chose the 300 Win - not for LR hunting - but for the substantial increase in Terminal ballistics it offers inside 300 yards. AND that I can adjust both external and terminal ballistices - depending on the game animal / terrain / ranges I'm hunting. Just my personal priorities - not recommending anything to anybody. :-)

Cheers!

I have four Savages, two bolts that are the 2nd and 3rd most accurate hunting guns that I own, one 17 rimfire and one model 99. Function and fun!

I am an admitted rifle snob.

I love my Savage 110.

Gentlemen,

Many a rifle has disappeared in my rearview miiror due to mediocre accuracy. This morning, my reloads are growing old waiting on this weather to improve. This old curmudgeon is impatiently holding his expectations in check. Friday looks solid for a range visit with this HC.

Will update.

It's a Savage, it will shoot. They have always had good barrels. There Accu-Trigger really put them on the map.

I have 7 or 8 savage 110 varmint rifles.

They all shoot but I have had function problems with them all.

I well not use a savage bolt gun for big game hunting.

I haven't been able to get out shooting, it's been a little chilly here.

Way back in ancient times when I was a young teen and relatively tough - Deer season - it was minus 18 in the Pennsylvania North. I sat beneath the tree, completely bundled up, only my eyes showing. Had my 35 Rem with 4x scope cradled in my lap. All up and down the mountain and far into the valley below me, the trees were cracking open. Each time one did - it soundled like a rifle shot, echoing up and down the valley. I'll never, ever forget that.

UPDATE on the High Country 300 Win.

There was a time when I weighed 265 and could get my 338 Win and 375 H&H to shoot cloverleafs at 100. I'm now 78 - weigh 175 - and was confident I could manage a 300 Win in a slightly heavier rifle. Last Friday showed me I couldn't - not with any joy at least. :-(

The rifle and my loads? After a few rounds at 50 to sight in - at 100 my first 5 shots were all touching, well under an inch. NICE rifle. Never wanted or used a brake and won't hunt with one. Thanks for the thought.

Yes, of course, I could download it - but what's the point of owning a 300 Win? The very accurate 30-06 I traded in on this HC - I went back and got it.

Growing older is a B***H. Anyway.....thank you for your support above - much appreciated.

While at the shop I retrieved a 110 Classic in 243 Win for all my Coyote hunting.

Take care Ya'll.

Cheers.
