f224, that thing is sweet! Who did the work?

John Brandstatter at Roscoe's Custom Pistols in Colorado. He has done a bunch of 6.8RemSPC conversions. Jb's email is cajbrand@msn.com

Very reasonably priced and quick turn around.

I installed the sight ramp, 22.250 magazine box parts and sling myself.

35Whelan, how did you get the sight off? I always milled mine off.

When I lived back East it was a G33/40 in a Bishop stock with a Lyman peep (I didn't know that a G33/40 was desirable back then).

Now it is a muffled AR.

Some of you guys have pretty fancy truck guns. Mine is a M 1 rifle. WW II issue - - and it looks and shoots like it. A 1911 Colt is also up front with the driver.

I just started after the base of the sight with a Dremel tool. Pretty quick I realized that the sight was welded on and just whacked it with a hammer. After that I carefully filed the remainder of the weld off with a file and dressed the top of the receiver.

Gives some credibility to the term "hammer mechanic".

Truck Gun --

Let's see if we can bump this topic back up to the front of the forum.

What's the intended use?

Hunting, varmints, or defense?

The all-round gun for me would be a Marlin or Winchester 30-30 lever action, maybe a scope in like 1.5 - 6 x.

But mostly what I'm looking for in a "truck gun" is not "hunting" or "varmints" -- but rather defense.

I have a lot of choices -- Dodge Ram SLT quad cab with a large center console.

My Uzi Mod 45 pistol will work, a couple high capacity 45 ACP mags or high capacity 9mm mags.

Ruger 629, 4" bbl, 44 mag. Speedloader.

AK-47, there's the all purpose defense carbine. Ten zillion Islamic terrorists can't be wrong.

Rem. 870, 12 gauge, 20" bbl. Imp. Cyl. "riot gun" from the Denver Police Dept. There's a good choice.

Then . . . getting into the "hunting/varmint" rifle for the "ranch" crew. Weatherby Vanguard 30-06, 3-9x Leupold scope.

Several 9mm, couple more 45 ACP semi-auto.

And so -- "Truck Gun" -- for what purpose? In an urban area for defense, and in a rural area for hunting/varmints.

Lately it's the Smith, 44 mag, 4" bbl. If I'm hunting, there's something else in the truck.

Just traded my truck for a new Mustang so my truck gun is now back in the rack. It was an 03 Spgfld 06 that had barrel and wood cut to 16" 3 position safety, timney trigger, lowscope bolt handle,2 1/2 X Lyman Alaskan in Griffin and Howe mount original irons with redfield sourdough high front blade, 1 1/2" compass set in butstock. It was done by Les Womack and really shoots nice with 150gr factory stuff. You DO know it has gone off when you pull the trigger. The Mustang gun is a Kimber Aegis II.

If it's moose season it's the Marlin 1895M in .450 Marlin....open sights. Otherwise it's a Mini-14 with Hogue Stock and Trijicon Reflex sight.

Dodge Cummins 4-door longbox, Laramie package (at my age my fat ass loves heated leather seats this time of year).

Savage 24 30-30 and 12 gauge 3 1/2" mag. If I got my pants one I got my Para-Ordnance P14 45acp on my belt.
Most importantly, I got Bob Wills in the CD player.

M1891 Mauser Bubbagun, barrel 24" with the original front sight moved to new muzzle, rear sight still in place, bolt handle replaced nicely, Buehler (?) safety, Weaver bases and rings with a later KV, post and crosshair, cost me $75 as described. Colt Commander .45 completes the ensemble.

This is a good topic. Let's see if we can move it back onto page one.

9mm and 45 ACP bbls for each. They're compact, semi-auto. One has a shoulder stock. The other shoots like a pistol.

Numrich Arms had a deal -- 25 rd. 9mm mags, new IMI production. Buy five and they toss in a canvas, Israeli marked magazine pouch. Less than $100.

I'm looking for a M70 stainless featherweight synthetic in 308 with a Leupold 3x9 for my ideal truck and foul weather gun. Right now, I alternate between a Brno ZG-47 7x57, a sporterized Springfield, a 1935 Chilean carbine and a Marlin 1936.

Marlin Model 1894S in 44 Mag. Kept nine shots of 180gr. JHP's in it with an empty chamber, good for the four or two legged critters. This was in central Arkansas, so the ranges weren't too long for the short barrel and pistol cartridge. Can't have a truck gun now because of working on the military base, but retirement is coming up soon. I may have to tell the wife I'll need a new "truck gun" for when I "get out". beer

It rotates, depending on mood and what may be in season.

There's always a Springfield Armory .45ACP in the console (legal in Nevada).

In the floor of the rear seat right now are a Browning 20 ga O/U and a Model 70 .22-250 (quail and coyotes).

Others in the rotation include Remington 870s, a couple of AR15s, a 10/22, a 77/22, various Contender configurations, a Marlin .44 mag, really dang near anything.

Hmmmmm.....haven't taken the .470 for a ride in a while.....

The Peoples Republic of Minnesota doesn't allow uncased and/or loaded firearms in a motorvehicle. Heck I once got pinched by the CO for a round left in the magazine of a cased shotgun that was in my duckboat while trailering. That being said ... as a NoDak Expat where the rule is "uncased and full mag is fine as long as chamber isn't hot" (unless you're whacking a vermin) ... I am fond of the "truck gun" concept ... particularly as NoDak is a presumed access state where posting is required to deny access.

Growing up Dad put a lot of miles through rural NoDak. Usually in a Suburban of one form or another. It had shelf racks with velcro straps ... one above the visors and another right above the head rests of the front seats. On the front rack sat a mod choked 20 ga Franchi AL-48 with 1 oz of 6's, back rack was a sporterized Springfield 25-06 with a straight 6x36 leupy and 100 gr hornady sp's.

As more of a waterfowler than Dad, I'd be inclined toward a shorter barrelled 12 for the shotgun, with a box of #4 hevi shot for jump shooting ducks or geese, or some lead 5's for sharps or ditch parrot country.

But I still cannot argue with a good "two bit aught" or 243 bolt gun with a straight 6 for reaching out and touching anything from jack rabbits to deer on the prairie (assuming proper season).

One feature that I do appreciate in the "truck gun" is a compact barrel for quickly getting out of the cab and deploying on target ...
