Is Herter's V9 the same 98-type action as the J9? Anybody know? Thanks.

According to the first edition of de Haas' "Bolt Action Rifles" the J9 used an M98 action made in Yugoslavia, while the U9 used a more modern British BSA action available in two lengths and five different models: the SSK3055 for the .223 family, the SSK3042 for the .308 and 7x57 families, the SSK3056 for the .284 Win, the SSK3043 for the .30-06 family, and the SSK3057 for the .30-06 length belted magnum family. According to de Haas the U9 actions that he examined were not nearly as well finished as similar actions on BSA rifles. Cheers, Al

The Herters V-9 is not a Mauser type action. The J-9 is a classic 98 type action. But I am also aware of a couple different makers of the J-9 action for Herters. A friend of mine has one in 300 WM that is built on a FN marked action and I have seen them also buuilt on Zastava actions. I have heard of other makers also. But they are all pretty much the same action, in that they are all a 98 type.
