Last July I was bragging on the Big Bore forum about my .404 http://www.accuratereloading.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=369040&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1 and asked you gentlemen what to do with a large ring small threaded 7x57 Francotte Mauser. I followed some of your advice and although it is not quite finished yet Id like to share another Mauser evening with you. Mbogo375, mrlexma and Atkinson suggested changing the sights and keeping it a 7x57. Thanks good people, thats just what I did. The H&H type front sight was so high that the shallow V rear sight got pretty high too, but it works just fine, putting 175 grs bullets just on top of the bead on 100 m. Should I have the bolt blued? and as a bonus the 404 and the damage it did on a warthog skull and on a kudu (patch on top stripe far right): Enough braggin for one evening. Thanks again. Today Im happy I took your advice. Cant wait to try it out. Boha, enjoying the evening with a beer and a Mauser

Sweetness. I vote for bluing the bolt handle and the shroud so that the two match as closely as possible.........DJ

I respect DJs opinion but on this one, I will have to stay on the bad side of the railroad tracks. I would not blue the bolt at all. It looks more "Mauser" the way it is now Cheers and good shooting seafire

Lovely, lovely, lovely. I've a Erma action, m'self, that I'm tryin' to figure out what t'do with. Yer .256 Rigby is a sweet lookin' lass that I'm tempted to imitate. I'll have t'go with a side swing or Buhler safety because of the scope I'll need to hunt out here in the colonies, but leavin' the shroud in the white does have a certain appeal, don'tcherknow, whichever style y'choose. Where didjer get the stock made?

Awfully decent of you, old chap. Many thanks. Rather a ricky question about the bluing, what? Got rather a splendid idea; I will let you fellows decide for me. On the morrow of the 25th of April the opinions will be investigated by myself, whereafter I shall make my resolve. I must disclose, however, that there will be none of that democracy-thing, labour movement or that sort of nonsense. I shall in stead take the advice of the wittiest. One must not investigate the woodwork too closely; I am myself responsible for all but the rough shaping, which was done by Mr Tervonen. Boha, esq.

Hi Boha May I ask what animal skin the warthog skulls is resting on? I've seen that species before, but I can't recall which one it was. jpb

Seafire, you might be right. Maybe he should polish the bolt on the blued one. I'll have to peruse my Mauser books to decide.........DJ

)The bolt should remain unblued and workmanlike, you'll only wear it of on other hard hunts. Bloody good shot on the warthog!(unless you did that after it was dead

Boha, I vote for leaving it in the white. I like the combination of white and blued steel. The white receivered military Mausers (1908 Brazilian, 1909 Argentine & Peruvian, 1912 Chilean, etc) are some of the most beautiful. The link to the discussion of last July reminded me of that interesting action on the Francotte. With the short length, small ring threads, long front ring, and undercut of the leading edge of the front ring (for a handguard), it should be a Mauser 1903 type action, such as the 1903 Turk - don't let the Turk association fool you - I have several, among the finest actions ever made by Mauser Oberndorf IMO. Little difference between the 1903 Turk and the 1909 Peruvian, except the modifications the Turks made to allow use of the 8x57. All of these 1903 type actions that I know of should have high charger humps though?? A fascinating question, that I'm sure we will never know the answer to. Beautiful rifles, nice work! Todd

Ok. Its morning over here. Ill blue the bolt and the shroud, leaving the cocking piece and the extractor in the white. And put some more redoil on the stock. It will thereafter reappear on this forum. Boha

I like everything blue but the bolt body..blue the extractor, and bolt housing...or blue the whole thing, bright metal reflects light on a hunting rifle I suppose...A blue bolt body stiffens the working of the bolt considerably until it wears the blue off in places...

Blue it then have it have the body and extractor jeweled.

Hi Guys. You all are very knowlegable about mausers. You'll have to forgive my ignorance. I have been looking for a good action to build a 6mm Rem on. Originally I decided to use a 98 mauser that am friend gave me. It was a 98 german mauser from 1944. I thought it was perfect until I started reading how they could be very soft or very hard metal. So I took it to work and had it tested. It turned out to have a rockwell of 16. This is much to soft from what I understand. This puts me in a rough spot and makes me wonder if I shouldn't look for an action like a Ruger or possibly a Winchester. The delima is that I am on a budget. Any suggestions?

Very nice rifles you have there. I'd blue everything except the cocking piece and extractor.

At home I am Getaloadof but at work I am just plain old Ty Herring. I believe you are correct. The best bang for my buck would have been the Savage. Of course I always want more than I can have. I allready bought a Hogue full length aluminum bed block stock, Timney trigger, and a 6mm Douglas Premium airguage barrel to match the mauser 98 action. Any one know where a GOOD 98 action is for less than $100?

Ty: Not a 98 Mauser action, but for a nephew graduating High School this year and bound for one of the Military Academies, me and his dad are having a rifle built for him as a graduation present. I settled also on the 6mm Remington as I love the round a lot. I love that case, it is just SO WELL Balanced. I thought of the Mauser at first, but since he is going to a military academy and wants to be a Marine Corp Officer, I decided to do the action in something American with a history. Got a Winchester made 1917 Enfield. I am putting a PacNor 26 inch Stainless Steel barrel with a 1 in 8 twist in a Heavy Sporter contour, and will mate it to a Boyd's Gray Laminated Stock. Those Enfields are a Solid rifle, capable of being converted to 458 Magnum with no problem. I can find Enfield's built by Winchester for the $125.00 range around here in Oregon. Eddystones are even cheaper, and the occasional 03A3 Springfield can be found for $150.00. Just some food for thought. Cheers and Good shooting seafire

Thanks for the most gracious offer seafire. For the time being, I will have to pass on the enfields etc and keep looking for a 98. If you come across one let me know. If I can help you, just yell. I will try to keep an eye on this site. Thanks, again
