The 7mm08 Remington and the 7x57 Mauser offer essentially identical performance.

The 7X57 IS an American cartridge in the same manner that the .375 H&H is an African cartridge.

The 7X57 with factory loads (most factory loads) is a whimpy darn thing. And in factory loadings , The 7mm08 has the edge. But if you hand load the 7X57 Especially if it is throated long can be loaded quite a bit faster. So, they are as stated by nordserta about even. Both very good rounds. I have a asthetic preference for the 7X57. But The 7mm 08 works real well too ! ...tj3006 freedom1st

I hunted whitetail deer this year with both a 7mm-08 and a 7x57mm. One doe with the 7mm-08 and two with the 7x57mm. There's really not much difference in the two cartridges, except the overall length. Both will do the job for you! LLS

The federal premium loads with Nosler Partitions will make a believer out of ya! I havea 7X57 and never bought a 7MM-08 for that very reason. There's nothing the mauser won't do that the 7-08 will.

33806whelen is spot on...... try as they might, with good brass and a modern or properly done mauser, the good ole', and i mean very,....ole'...., 7x57 is every bit as good as any later std.-non-magnum cartridge based round out there. if it sucks air to live, the 7x57 has probably stopped it at some time or another.

I have a 7x57 on a 96 Chilean Mauser action with a 26 in Stainless fluted Shilen barrel. What a great rifle this one is. My hunting load is with the 140gr Barnes triple shock X bullet. A whitey buck at 280 yards and a mule buck at 50 yards. All around great performance for me, and light recoiling. FS

Not saying it doesn't exist, but is there such a thing as a Mod. 96 Chilean mauser? Just a question . No confrontation intended. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

The last muley I killed was a little 2x3 meat buck. I used a Sellier & Bellot 173 grain factory load that chronied at 2376 fps. The shot was just over 200 yards and he went down without taking a step. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on elk, but I'd probably choose a different bullet. It's close to the 7mm-08, a bit less in factory loads but a bit more in handloads and modern guns. Been loading for one friend with the 154gr Interlock and it killed everything it's hit so far. I load the same bullet in 7x64mm for the same friend and there is no difference that I can ascertain between the two, I think you'd need to go to a magnum 7mm to notice any significant difference in penetration or trajectory. ________ "...And on the 8th day, God created beer so those crazy Canadians wouldn't take over the world..."

I have the 7-08, the 7x57, and a .280. Why all those 7mm's. I like each for a reason but the 7x57 is my favorite. Last year I shot 5 deer and 1 raccoon with it-all one shot kills that dropped in their tracks, well one fell on its butt and the coon did more kicking than the deer. That was a tough one. I was using 48 gr. of h-414 with the Sierra Pro Hunter 140 gr. Shot behind the shoulder the exit hole was the size of my fist or larger. That Pro Hunter is a great deer bullet IMO and that powder works perfect with it. Shot two with the .280 this year using a max load of AA3100 and the 150 gr.Nosler Solid Base and the deer ran 50 and 100 yds before dropping. The Nosler's kind of blew up only partially exiting. I use 120 grain Nosler BT's in my 7-08 and have killed two deer and a javalina with good pass through shots and large exit wounds. The 120 NBT is a good deer bullet for me. They build them tougher now. If I had to only have one rifle, it would be the ole Ruger 7x57. Merg

Bartsche, There was an experimental model 1896 Mausers in 6mm, but as far as I know, none were adopted by anyone. I don't think there was a model 1896 7mm. Chilean or otherwise. I have been wrong before, just ask my wife, she could provide you with chapter and verse.

For over 30 years the 7x57 was my only centerfire rifle.Never once let me down.Unfortunately few if any still chamber for it anymore. That said the 7-08 would be an excellent choice as it's very close to the 7x57.I recently added another Ruger to the collection. This time the Hawkeye stainless/blk stock in .280 Rem.I was very tempted to go with the 7-08 though.Maybe next time !
