The workmanship of the ones made in Japan were actually better than the ones made in Germany. Have a look at it & if its the right price & in good condition I would not let the made in Japan hold you back. Mine is a made in Japan MkV - one of the now rare Varmintmasters with teh really small action in 22-250. Shoots great, adjusted trigger myself. Wood is generally quite spectacular.

The early ones made in the USA I have been told were the best Mark V's in manufacturuing quality. Don't know about the latest batch as there must be cost pressures with products like their own Vanguard moving pricepoints down.

You can make a great gun anywhere, its hardly high tech anymore. But a matter of what the budget is set by the accountant. Howa used to make a nice action & while still looks the same QC has gone to pot & not surprising at the bargain prices they are selling at. Something has got to give.

I've got 4 of the wby's made in japan. A 257, 270,300,340. ALL are great shooters. When wby moved the production here I just had to have one of the first ultralights in 300 wby. It has been a BIG PIECE OF ______. The action is not as smooth and it has NEVER been a decent shooter. Am now going to experiment with some shimming at the tip of the forarm. Believe it or not the 340 was bought on a closeout list just as it became known that production was moving back to the states at the terrible price of $389 brand new!!!!

Sounds like the later American Wby's are back on track but, don't be at all afraid of the Jap ones.

This is NOT ONLY true of Weatherbys, but also Brownings. Those high-grade Browning shotguns that were made in Japan actually had better engraving, checkering, and other details than the Belgian ones which everyone clambers for! Seems in Japan, they have women doing the checkering and engraving, and their manual dexterity is second to none in the world.

(The days of "JAP JUNK ended in the early 1950's-but a lot of us live in the past! We taught quality control to the Japanese, then promptly forgaot all about it HERE!)
