416 Rigby with 350 grain pills leaving the muzzle at ~ 2800 fps.

Works well. 400 yards would be an absolute max though, at least for me.

I would like to get the opinion of others on the ideal caliber for elk?
Thanks.

Any of the .338's or a .375 H&H. Heavy bullets do good work at long range. The .300's become a 30-30 at long enough range.

For 400yd shooting shouldn't one take into account the B.C and the S.D of the bullet that is why many consider the 338 to be such a fine elk round cause the bullets offer high B.C and S.D compared to the 416 and 375 bullets and even the 358 on the market. Also the heavier 30 caliber bullets have very High B.C and S.D to. I have shot 7 elk in my lifetime and none of the were taking over 200yds the furthest might have been 150 yds and I shot her with my ass kicking 375 Weatherby with 270 gr Hornady, The closet one was was about the 30 yds shot her with a 284 with factory 150gr ammo. I shot a bull at about 100yds using my 348-06 Ackley Imp. using 200gr Hornady flat points at about 2400 F.P.S.

Do you have any conception of the recoil of the cartridge you are suggesting? I hope you're not going to suggest that a 416 is required for elk? Elk at 400 yards is a whole other issue we won't even get into right now.

Not required, but it sure would work well. Can't bash A C for this one. But, I always favor going heavier vs. lighter or even the "normal". 470 NE might work well also. It worked great for me on two whitetails last year
